Eddie gives sledging a serve

April 28 | Ashley Robinson

I never thought I would be agreeing with Eddie McGuire. “What’s going on”, I have to ask myself. Last week I was rapping “Rabs” Warren and this week I’m agreeing with Eddie.

In his capacity as Collingwood president, he has come out swinging in regards to the AFL and the recent on-field sledging episodes.

I have said in the past that sledging should stay on the field, but really is there any need for personal insults relating to colour, family, loved ones and sexual preferences?

It really is a disgrace if players have to resort to gutter tactics to put competitors off their game. It should be dealt with severely by the governing bodies of all codes. Good on you Eddie.

Ben Tune ran 70 metres to score a try in his last game on Australian soil in front of a handful of Reds supporters at Suncorp to help record only their second win of the season.

Sadly, the win couldn’t lift them off the bottom of the Super 14 table. It is a far cry from his match-winning try in the 1999 World Cup final, but maybe Ben has been blessed because I think the Reds have a bit of misery to go over the next couple of years.

The only consolation is that the Waratahs are down there with them, just a win away. On the playing field, rugby in Australia seems to be going through a rough patch if results count for anything, and in the boardroom it isn’t any better with the resignation of the CEO and calls to bring back the Midas man, former guru of the glory days John O’Neill. He knocked that on the head yesterday.

The Cricket World Cup winds up tonight and, as stated last week, I have found it a little on the sad and boring side. Australia will be hard to beat against the cagey Sri Lankans and it should be entertaining, nearly as much as the sacked or resigning coaches lobbying for positions.

Even on the Coast it is going on with Scorchers coach Eddo Brandes who has put his hand up to take control of the Indian indoor cricket side at next year’s World Cup in England.

The talented cricketer and Scorchers coach has apparently got his hands full as I am told the Indians’ form isn’t anything to write home about. I hope they have some success because I would hate to see news clips from India with effigies of Eddo being lit up. That’s a lot of fire.

You know just by looking at me it’s not hard to figure out all my brother gave me was a thick ear, at the least. Not so Julian Wilson, the current ISA junior world surfing champion, whose older brother Bart also happens to be his manager.

The older Wilson has come up with the dream job for an 18-year-old. Tomorrow night Julian and young actor Danielle Catanzariti will introduce Evermore at the MTV Awards.

I heard something the other day that really impressed me. Some friends of mine (yes I do have a couple) have enrolled their young son into a martial arts regime at Infinity Martial Arts Currimundi.

Here’s the thing. The young bloke is due to go for his first belt grading but before he can his parents and teacher have to fill out a form about his manners, work ethic etc before he can continue.

Now that is a great idea, and would be useful in many sports, although when I was a kid it might have brought my sporting interests to a grinding halt.

Don't forget tomorrow’s Tour de Kawana Charity Cycle for Cystic Fibrosis. The gathering of all styles of bikes, lycra and riders is at Innovation Parkway near Lake Kawana.

There are 10km or 30km rides and you can either call Michael Lamberton of Cycleworld Maroochydore, 5443 7442 to register or just turn up at 6.30 am tomorrow.

Speaking of Cycle World, I was in there the other day and it was quite busy, which goes against the retail trend of late. The reason some say is Michael’s personality but I would be more inclined to think it is people’s desire to stop global warming and contribute to a greener environment.

Have your say
