Ashley Robinson is the master of self-deprecation. He reckons he has two sorts of luck – bad luck and no luck. As a lifetime resident of the Coast, this former publican has plenty of nostalgic memories to share. Magic moments on NRL menu

The Broncos 20-year shindig last Friday was their most successful, and the NRL Snipe was there in all his glory. Once again his comments are good, bad and ugly.
“The Good was Mitchell Lewis, son of the King, who did a fantastic job of an audio visual presentation. The Bad was the former Bronco ‘bad boy’ who initially looked like he’d reformed but with the lunch starting at 12.30, the bouncers were circling him at 3pm and he was back to his old form by four and out.
The ugly were on the highlights package, some of the hair styles and fashion sense of the players from 1988, what were we thinking?
Speaking of sponsors product and football, I heard a story last week about a high ranking official of the ‘other’ code – you know, the game played by gentlemen.
Apparently he, too, was back in his old stomping ground and filled up like the last bus, so much so in fact that he arrived at his usual media commitment forgetting that he had prearranged a replacement in view of his rather liquid social commitment, but he forgot and turned up.
Talk about outsmarting himself; it would never happen in league.
A little bit of travel blog from our wandering accident waiting to happen, former Kawana Dolphin Callan “Chalky” Sipthorp.
The accident-prone winger picked, of course, the Running of The Bulls weekend when he visited Spain.
How scary is that? The bloke can’t go to the Kawana pub with hurting himself.
For those that don’t know him, to sum up, instead of photo albums his mother keeps a filing cabinet with old x-rays.
Anyway you will be happy to know he never got gored by a bull, but he did stub his toe and it did get infected and he did have to go to a doctor and carry around a back pack full of pills and dressings, much to the amusement of his travelling companions.
No doubt about coaching footy, no matter what the level, it certainly can shorten the live of coaches.
Take Cronulla Sharks coach Ricky Stuart – at the halfway mark of the NRL they were in the eight but, after another huge losing streak like in 2006, with 10 or 11 first graders injured, they are a chance of running last.
The difference between this year and last is the for and against is still in a positive and lines up pretty well with top eight teams. They have lost 10 games by four points or less and have had some dubious refereeing decisions seal their fate. Now through all this, the usually intense coach has had to keep a sense of humour.
At a function a couple of weeks ago someone asked him on the subject of bad calls, “Do you ever ring Robert Finch (referee co-ordinator) and ask for an explanation?”
The coach replied, “Mate do you ever ring your mother-in-law and tell her you’re not happy with her daughter and maybe she could improve on a few things? What sort of response do you reckon you would get?” Speaking of coaches, I ran into Falcons coach, Des “Mr Happy” Allen, last Sunday at Crusher Park.
I thought my old mate would be smiling after their upset victory overt Wests the night before but he looked like he’d lost his much-cared-for lunch money.
On enquiring he told me that he had promised his players if they won the previous night he would go clubbing with them. Des at O’Malleys or Fridays in the early hours of the morning, now that would be scary.
I saw a press release come out from the QRL the other day which read something like this. “It has been debate for some time…and now the QRL is putting it to the test.
“Should the Wizard Cup clubs stick with tradition and retain the standardised maroon ring around their logos, or should we move with the times and discard the border, a link back to the old Q logo.” (I don’t know how you move with the times by going back but anyway.)
That very topic will be put on the table at the next Qld Wizard Cup and FOGS Cup chief executives’ meeting later this month.
Seeing as supporters are those who ultimately the logos are designed for we’d like to hear your thoughts.
