Ashley Robinson is the master of self-deprecation. He reckons he has two sorts of luck – bad luck and no luck. As a lifetime resident of the Coast, this former publican has plenty of nostalgic memories to share. War of words over broken jaw
| Ashley Robinson
There has been a bit of action at 2GB and its associated relay stations over the last week or so, with continuous talk co-hosts Darryl Brohman and Bob Fulton having a war of words over that incident in the 1983 Origin series when Les Boyd broke the big fellow’s jaw.
Apparently, Boyd and Brohman have been doing some work together and a blue between the two has erupted about who was embarrassed about what happened way back then.
In short, it seems Fulton has weighed in on air, calling Darryl some very unkind names and berating him about taking civil action against Boyd.
Well, the NRL Snipe is fired up about all this. And I must say he has a pretty good memory.
“Bozo is kidding giving it to Darryl about suing Les Boyd in 1983 because in 1982 Les Boyd apparently took civil action against Jack Gibson’s alleged comments in a newspaper article about Les’s weight, speed and skill levels,” the Snipe said.
“Apparently, he won the case and it cost Gibson a fair bit of brass, so Bozo shouldn’t be pointing the finger at Darryl about suing people. I reckon there will be plenty of people tuning in today to see what goes on; maybe it is just a ratings grab.”
Old boys celebrate
I see the Broncos continue to celebrate their 20 years of rugby league with an Old Boys’ Luncheon at Red Hill on August 3.
The entire 1988 team, “The Originals”, will be in attendance. This includes Terry Matterson, who is currently coaching in England.
Rumour has it that he may also be inducted into the Broncos Hall of Fame at the same time.
You never know, they are supposed to be looking for a coach at the end of next year and Matterson is a renowned student of the game – maybe it is his time.

President cracks a smile
Well, I never thought it would happen, but I was walking past the Duporth Tavern yesterday and I spotted the Sunshine Coast Rugby Union president Ian McKinnon doing something rarely seen – he was smiling.
Instantly I thought he must have been laughing about how fat I am getting, but it was actually a press conference to announce new Stingrays coach, Glenn Panoho.
As I peered through the bushes I realised that, with outgoing coach David Clark still involved, Franky Bourke as the development officer and former Wallaby Panoho as coach, it is no wonder the faintest of smiles was cracking the president’s usually surly poker face.
Join the NOBS
Here is a chance for ex-Nambour players to get together. On August 4, they are launching the Nambour Old Boys’ Club, with a function at 6pm at the Crushers clubhouse.
Tony Durkin will be the MC and special guests are ex-Origin stars Dan Stains, Kerry Boustead and Billy Moore.
The idea of the NOBS, as they will be known (quite appropriate, if you ask me), is to have several functions during the year with money raised going to the building fund at the club.
The man behind it is James Ward and in his typical cheeky fashion, he has asked Billy to be the patron of that association or, in fact, the Head NOB.
Should be a great night. For tickets and a chance to listen to some legends of the game and maybe buy some great memorabilia, ring Jimmy on 0414 748 943. Tickets are $15.
Well-timed hole-in-one
What about 15-year-old Horton Park Golf Club member Matt Gill? Talk about a time and a place to get a hole-in-one.
Matt, who plays off a handicap of four, shot an ace on the 10th at Nambour last weekend when he played the perfect wedge shot over the green side bunker into the hole while competing in the Sunshine Coast and South Burnett District Golf Associations junior championship.
Farewell to a local legend
On a sad note, former Maroochydore Swans rugby legend John Currey passed away earlier this week after a long battle with cancer.
There is nothing I can say about John that has not been said, except that my thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family, and the world is certainly a better place for him having been here.
