Blog Central: Ashley Robinson Ashley Robinson is the master of self-deprecation. He reckons he has two sorts of luck – bad luck and no luck. As a lifetime resident of the Coast, this former publican has plenty of nostalgic memories to share.

Petero Affair is all wrong

June 30 | Ashley Robinson

I can't help myself.

I wasn’t going to mention the “Petero Affair” at the Broncos. But, hey, everyone is allowed an opinion.

There has been a lot of talk about big numbers with the big guy.

Greed has even come into the mix, but I can’t agree with that.

The way I see it is, as usual, a little different than most.

I wasn’t a huge fan of Petero until the last couple of years, but plenty of people have been and for good reason.

There was another fellow at the Broncos who probably took the limelight off Petero. I think his name was Shane something.

The reason I never rated Petero as highly as he deserved is that I was probably watching Webcke.

Now, Petero came into his own when Webcke retired from Origin and then, this year during the Broncos’ poor start, he was a lone gun.

Now I am thinking that all those years he played with his mate he was patiently waiting for his time in the sun, no Tallis, no Webcke, and Petero looking forward to being a one-club player, getting the recognition and reward he deserves.

The Broncos, being the close-knit club they are, probably just kept telling him, “Your time is coming. Take the unders for a few years and reap the benefit at the end”.

Instead, there he was, with more tape on him than a Terry White Chemist, looking for a new club.

That is so wrong.

While I am on player deals and movement, how wrong is that during mid year we are overtaken by deals and rumours?

It is so unfair to the fans of the clubs for one thing.

Take Penrith and the Peter Wallace going to the Broncos saga. Last week they get an absolute touch-up from the Warriors after their star player was dropped to the reggies because he didn’t fit into things for next year.

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that the NRL has the right product on the field. Maybe there is a bit to do in the boardrooms.

Basketball Queensland Holiday Camp
Children looking for some fun these school holidays can look no further, with Basketball Queensland holding a holiday camp at Caloundra.

It will be held on Monday from 9am to 3pm at Caloundra Indoor Stadium and is open to boys and girls aged seven to 14 years.

People wanting to attend may call 0411 314 554.

Athletes as Role Models
CADET Training and Employment is driving an exciting mentoring program using athletes as role models.

They have identified that students in the middle phase of their learning are most at risk of disengaging from school. One possible solution is to empower sporting identities to mentor young people.

For more information on the project, ring Maree Cansick 0402 255 160.

The program is being launched at Alfies Café Caloundra on Wednesday with the guest speaker being former NBL star Eric Bailey.

Of course, Allan Langer will be the host and he’s not a bad guy to head up the list of local mentors.
