Anna: protecting koalas and getting the games

August 18 | Ashley Robinson

Talk about knee-jerk reactions.

It must be something to do with governments in power because the state and federal governments seem to jump from one hasty decision or idea to another while the opposition becomes the voice of reason – warning, chastising, taking the opposite view of whatever the persons in power want but never, ever agreeing.

Of course if the conservatives are the ones driving the Titanic, oops I mean the government, the positions are reversed.

For instance, both governments have made some ridiculous decisions in regard to the liquor industry with not much impact and leaving those that have got a clue wondering where the boffins get their information before they whisper it into the appropriate shell like ear of someone in power and all of a sudden it is rammed through parliament.

The latest amazing statement coming from our state headquarters reacting to the news that koalas are heading for the endangered list and they may ban residents having dogs in some residential precincts that have been identified as koala habitats.

At first I thought it was ludicrous to even entertain the idea because I can’t remember the last time I saw a dog shinning up a tree to grab a koala.

But for our premier to come out with such a statement must mean statistics back up the dog attack theory and in no way do I want to demean the important work animal rescue does for this wonderful Aussie icon.

In my mind wouldn’t it be better to pass some more strict laws on dog and cat owners keeping them under control and in their yard rather than some witless beauracrat stopping granny having her Jack Russell.

But timing is everything and I see an opportunity because of it.

Just as the general public was trying to decipher whether Anna was on the money or not, the horrific news came through about a gang killing koalas and some of other god’s creatures for perverse fun.

No fair thinking person could disagree that it is time to lift the bar extensively on the punishment dealt out to anyone that has been found guilty of crimes against animals.

I am sick of reading about good behaviour bonds being handed out by magistrates for crimes that turn my stomach.

While I am on ‘Anna Cam’, when I first heard the news that Brisbane was thinking about an Olympic bid for 2024 I thought everyone had gone insane.

But after realising I would be knocking on the door of 70 by then, I decided it wouldn’t really bother me.

I stopped worrying about the gridlock in Brisbane now, the water problems the huge stadiums they will have no use for after it is over, like Brisbane’s ANZ and the Olympic Stadium in Sydney and the list goes on.

But then I decided it might be a good thing, because if they want to make it a successful games the first thing they will have to do is fix the transport problems in Brisbane, starting with the roundabout at the airport because if they don’t they might have to put a big screen up on it so visitors can watch the games from their cars as they won’t make it out of the airport.

As usual it is all about me so I don’t really care about Brisbane because I won’t be going, not unless by then they have supercharged those three-wheel carts that senior citizens get round in.

But the real up side is after reading what the local people that know have to say last week it is clear to me that a lot of the events would have to be on the Coast.

Now this would mean that at last the government would have a red hot go at fixing our pathetic public transport system, would get a stadium with a rectangular field and maybe even a new hospital.

Leading up to 2024 we would get a bunch more police and other services with the challenge being hanging on to them after it’s over.

Yes the Coast might be a better place for the 2024 games, particularly if Anna makes the official mascot the koala and we might start looking after them from now.

Have your say
