Ashley Robinson is the master of self-deprecation. He reckons he has two sorts of luck – bad luck and no luck. As a lifetime resident of the Coast, this former publican has plenty of nostalgic memories to share. Aussie cricketers could show humility

There is no doubt about the Kiss of Death.
Last week I commented on how well the Indian and Australian sides have been getting on and, since then, there have been suspensions, threats of ending the tour and all sorts of things going on.
I sure have a good strike rate but, in my defence, I did allude to the fact that the Australians’ good behaviour could have been because they were winning easily.
Bingo, an enthralling and close Test match and, all of a sudden, men behaving badly – or at least accusations of it from both sides.
I don’t think Andrew Symonds declaring to the world that he knew he got an edge to slips on 30, but was given not out and went to make 150 or so, really helped.
He either should have walked or kept it to himself.
Now I mentioned this to the resident golf pro at Royal Beerwah John Mellish, and just to make it interesting, I threw in a comparison to Symonds – and Pup Clarke for that matter, who got an edge bigger than my head to first slip but wouldn’t walk – with the royal and ancient game of golf.
In the back of my mind I was thinking US golfer Brandt Snedeker, who called a penalty shot on himself in the Australian Open that may have cost him the title, and by all accounts he was the only one who saw it.
Now John came in hook, line and sinker, telling me that golfers were trained to play by the rules and so should the cricketers.
He went on to say that he wouldn’t play golf for money with the above-mentioned cricketers or the skipper because you wouldn’t know if they’d had an extra shot in the rough. Not a bad point.
Accuse me of being anti-Australian cricket but I really think, at times, they could show more humility. They really aren’t very good at that side of things.
There has been plenty of comment about them carrying on after the exciting finish to the Second Test and, while I thought they were a bit over the top, it didn’t measure to a previous skipper’s effort a few years ago when they comprehensively beat the West Indies.
During the presentation, they carried on like pork chops while officials were trying to make a presentation to Courtney Walsh, as it was his last tour.
Maybe Ricky Ponting should watch a replay that I saw on the ABC of a Windies tour of Australia.
A presentation involving Sir Frank Worrell as the losing skipper and Richie Benaud as the humble victor, makes today’s effort look like soccer hooliganism.
Dad’s cycle for cancer
There certainly are some special people in the world. Take Linden Bleijie, for instance.
He’s just completed a 1500km bike ride from Victoria to Kings Beach to raise money for cancer sufferers and research.
He did it unsupported because he figured that a lot of people suffering do it by themselves, therefore, so would he, which is quite remarkable.
Now the single father had to juggle looking after his daughter with working and training and it really got tough when his daughter had to go to hospital.
But Linden was that dedicated to his cause that he set up his bike in the room on a stationary trainer so he could support his daughter, but still prepare himself for the upcoming trek.
Cancer has certainly found a formidable opponent – well done.
Look out, short stuff
All local football codes are back in training and I ran into a very handy league halfback the other day who was lamenting missing beach work because of prenatal classes with his partner and their impending birth.
I reckon they should be careful because he is vertically challenged and the other couples might mistake him for a baby and throw a nappy on him for practice.
Rodeo rained out
The Kiss of Death has racked up another victim. The Noosa Pirates Rodeo was supposed to be this weekend, but has been cancelled due to poor weather and the club is hoping to hold it at Easter.
The bright side of that is El Presidente Peter Magregor will be in town.
Council elections will be over but hopefully there will be enough bull left to get him on one.
