Whalers must be stopped

January 21 | Ashley Robinson

The drama over the Japanese whalers shouldn’t really surprise anyone, although I did have to shake my head when everyone was banging on about the two guys getting held hostage.

They did illegally board the vessel. What did they expect, a tea party with the captain and crew?

But before someone harpoons me, let me say I am 100% behind what the Sea Sherpherd Conservation Society is trying to achieve – the Japanese have to be stopped.

The sad part is they were only a few votes off being able to actually go back to whaling fulltime, which just goes to show what money can buy.

Now everyone has been asking about how low key our federal government has been about the whole issue. But really, what do we expect to happen?

It is all about imports, exports, trade partners and money and they are being very careful not to rock the whaling boat too much – which is sad in itself.

But before we all get on our high horse about the plight of those beautiful creatures, let he who has no sin cast the first stone or in this case harpoon.

It is not that long ago that we as a nation were turning a blind eye to what was going on in Timor while our politicians got their collective pictures taken in funny shirts with the Indonesian government.

We are currently preparing to go to the Beijing Olympics but have short-term memory loss at what has gone on in and is still going on in China to human beings.

Of course, Tibet is another word which shouldn’t be mentioned coming up to Olympics as we shouldn’t let politics or human rights interfere with sport.

But hey, don’t rock the boat or not only won’t they come out with their bat and ball and play with us but (shock, horror) they mightn’t trade with us either.

Even closer to home, like Kawana for instance, we are aghast when there is a proposed hostel along Nicklin Way where, I might add, there currently stands a motel that possibly has had all types of characters staying there with no complaints.

But now the government is proposing a centre to help people, we all want to protest.

An attitude resembling, “it is okay with me as long as it isn’t next door”– and I could be guilty of that as well.

But let’s not worry about humans nearly on our doorstep, get out of my way I’m boarding that whaling boat.

Now if we want to talk about the animal kingdom, what about battery hens.

I don’t see too many people protesting outside shops that sell eggs from one of the most inhumane practices that we continue to turn a blind eye to.

Like the chooks, that is only scratching the surface.

Of course previously mentioned, random sellers of pets, dogs, cats and the like that pumps them out like handbags and shoes with the future for most lying in a animal refuge, if they’re lucky. Why don’t we do something about that?

But back to the humans and on the complete other hand, there are tools around like Corey Delaney, who had the party in Victoria and is now some type of national celebrity.

Let me get this right. He has had television offers, radio and a chance to front a band all because he had total disregard for the police, the community and his family.

The Warrick Capper look-a-like should be strapped to the front of a Greenpeace boat with “Bloody Idiot” tattooed on his forehead and a sign telling the Japanese if you want to shoot something for “scientific research” shoot this idiot and tell us what makes him tick, so we can do something about the gene pool.

Now I know all the bleeding hearts out there will say he is only a kid, he needs some guidance and they are probably partially correct.

But his whole demeanour is just wrong.

My point, you may well ask? I am all for stopping the whaling, but I think we also need to look at a few other atrocities that are going on around us – both animal and human.

Japan's attitude and brutal butchering of whales needs to be challenged and apprehended, despite our own hypocrisy. These animals are higher beings, innocent and pure, with songs and language, perfectly adapted to their environment, and have evolved without violence or pollution, more than can be said for humans!

When the whales are safe, and whaling must stop, then we can objectively look at our domestic animals and wildlife and recognise the pain we cause to these creatures, so easily overlooked!

Hypocrisy can be unveiled by outsiders, considered "normal" until challenged and unmasked. We once hunted whales, torturing them for hours before they finally died, with more primitive weapons than Japan's war-head harpoons!

As challenged by ethicist Peter Singer, we need to abandon clinical and cold-blooded "science" to justify the needless suffering, torture and exploitation of animals in our own back-yards.

"I don’t see too many people protesting outside shops that sell eggs from one of the most inhumane practices that we continue to turn a blind eye to."

You must have missed the Human Battery Cage when it toured all of Australia and the recent protests in Canberra, both aimed at eliminating the battery cage (and suggesting veganism as an even better solution).

Out of interest, do you participate in those protests? I did.

Thank you, you will get no argument from me, I just wanted to make a couple of points about hypocrisy.

I love the passion you have for those beautiful animals.

Ashley, what a brilliant article and may I say probably your best ever.

As to the comments by "vkortega" I can see you are a passionate whale lover however hypocrisy does not select us, we select it. Monkeys are eaten as normal food in some countries, so are sheep, pigs, cattle, dogs, snakes, dolphin, etc, etc. It is our hypocrisy that determines which animal, bird, mammal or fish is worthy of our humane intervention.

What one sees as barbaric another sees as food.

Lobster go into a boiling pot alive unless we humanely shove it in the freezer to "go to sleep". Wonder how we are discussed in the lobster chat rooms or haven't we determined they are higher beings yet?

Some call it natural selection, after all we are carnivores!

Food for thought, excuse the pun.

PS. I am against whaling

Dailyvegeditor,

No I was unaware of that protest, I guess my comments were general, and uninformed, but if I wouldn't have wrote it I wouldn't have found out, and awareness is a great thing no matter how it comes about. Keep up the good work.

Afternoon John,

thanks for your comments and I think it proves one thing, it is a very emotive subject.

Pretty shallow and simplistic, Ashley. It's never too hard to find hypocrisy, especially if one looks across as many spectrums as you did in that Article.

Just how hard would you go, against whaling?

You seem to acknowledge the illegality of what those two blokes did, but then, you also seem, hypocritically, to applaud their illegal act!

Huh?

Okay Bob, I reckon I am a lot things but shallow isn't one of them, stupid and foot in mouth possibly. No I don't applaud the guys boarding the boat, I think it endangers lots of lives I also think the Sea Shepherd and Greenpeace take some big risks and don't really agree. But I do agree with their ambition to stop the slaughter of whales, I guess I haven't got the answer on how they do it. My point is the combined governments of the free world could stop them if they were fair dinkum. Hope that clears it up for you.

Ashley, the combined Governments are doing what they can within their power. Australia is leading the way with successful action in the Federal Court, the results of which I believe, those two blokes.....whose actions endangered no lives if what I saw on TV was their boarding of the Jap whaler......were delivering to the Jap.
