Behind Australia Zoo's iron curtain

March 5 | Bill Hoffman

The unravelling story about our Camelot – Australia Zoo – is an intriguing peek behind a cleverly constructed curtain.

If only half of the rumours swirling up from the edges of the Beerwah State forest are true, the story that lies at the heart of Bob Irwin’s departure is well worth telling.

Do journalists have a right to examine the story from every angle?

Yes we do. Caloundra councillor Anna Grosskreutz is just plain wrong with her claim, reported in Monday’s Daily, that it is a family problem and should be kept private.

The Irwins, like many celebrities, have always sold family as part of the package. The details we know of Terri and Steve’s courtship and marriage are only those the couple chose to reveal. Bindi’s birthday has been a media event since she was born.

Even Steve’s death and the mourning that followed became a carefully scripted, made-for-television event.

It is a bit rich, then, for Ms Grosskreutz – or anyone else, for that matter – to suggest that journalists should just not report anything that doesn’t fit with the construct, marketed by svengali John Stainton, of perfect, happy, alturistic family and happy staff and volunteers beavering away for the sake of the animals.

What I found disturbing was Ms Grosskreutz’s suggestion that we should ignore the story because “bad” publicity may have a financial cost.

It was an oddly desperate take on things that one would hope did not reflect the measure by which she intends to make decisions on behalf of Division One.

Do you believe in miracles?

There are many among us who believe in miracles. The Catholics have their saints and others have the literal interpretation of the Bible’s parables and heroes.

But it would take some doing to fit a six-star, nine-storey resort onto the 600 square metre block of land at Mooloolaba proposed by one development application now before Maroochy Council. Talk about loaves and fishes.

What is a six-star resort anyway? Mayoral contender Joe Natoli aspires to one and seems keen to have council officers find some way to fit this over-sized, under-car-parked proposal onto the pocket-handkerchief site.

Whatever else comes with six-star, it doesn’t extend to balconies or windows that open and fits oddly with the motel-style accommodation described in the development application.

Mr Natoli has denied any link between his zeal and his relationship with the applicant, King’s Church business council member Josh Hunt, whose catering company did his campaign launch.

None is suggested. But there is no denying that Mr Natoli has shown considerable naivety in his handling of this matter.

One-eyed view on housing

Housing affordability is suddenly everyone’s concern. Was it only two years ago that we were measuring newfound wealth that came with our property values, revelling in how smart we were and looking for investment homes to build an early retirement?

Now we’re measuring mortgage repayments against holiday plans and finding a reality check. It was good while it lasted. Now comes the pain.

Not the least of that pain will be the shonky solutions that claim to make housing affordable for our kids.

It was disturbing to see our own university commission a Housing Affordability report, funded by a property developer and authored by an academic informed by the sole perspective of deregulation.

University of the Sunshine Coast senior lecturer in management Scott Prasser came over all righteous in its defence, claiming: “My view is you don’t ban people from saying things. University is a place where we allow views to be expressed.”

No one is suggesting anyone be banned from saying anything. However, while there is obviously no shortage of land development companies willing to sponsor a report by a champion of deregulation, who will commission and fund the contrary view?

The fact is that Dr Alan Moran heads the Institute of Public Affairs deregulation unit from where he trumpets the benefits of giving business unfettered rein. The report is anything but definitive, as described in a release announcing its completion.

It has one perspective and one fundamental solution, the consequence of which would make the university’s new planning curricula redundant.

When will it all end?

Joe Natoli may be lagging in all published polls but campaign manager and mayoral wife Rosanna can still find inspiration.

Jane Gardner’s campaign trail piece, “The Long Run”, in last Saturday’s Daily, included the following gem.

“It’s amazing when you have this kind of event how the adrenalin kicks in and you find yourself being able to do extraordinary things,” she (Mrs Natoli) said. “There must be something greater than us that’s fuelling us, it couldn’t be humanly possible.’’

Oh God, is there still 10 days to go in this campaign?

Bill. I would like particularly to comment on the issues of the Natolis, miracles and inspiration from above. It never ocurred to me that there may be something greater fuelling their campaign until I read Joe's epistle in this morning's Daily, and your revelation above.

I had naively thought that the highest power fueling their campaign was whoever it is that is paying for those annoying disappearing flashing banner ads all over this website.

However. The Daily now reveals there may be higher powers at work here. If George W Bush got into power on the back of the religious vote in the US, why not Joe on the SC ?

Housing. People need to realise they only benefit from higher property prices if they're selling and going somewhere else.

People who create their family home here with the intention of staying in it for as long as they can shouldn't really be rejoicing about higher property prices.

Is it possible there's a silent majority who would be quite happy if property price rises slowed?

If the sale prices of land and houses were monitored we could see if there are excessive profits being pulled out and who is really responsible for housing unaffordability.

We can only hope that Joe goes the same way as Mr Bush is going and Mr Howard, another who has walked into government through the church door, has already gone.

Australia Circus - uhm, I mean Zoo.
No really, it's a circus and it always has been. Terri's bald faced greed has always been blindingly obvious to me, and the appalling way she has made her children media fodder for the empire is just disgusting. I hope the whole sick charade falls down around her knees and her empire is seen to be the naked commercial enterprise it so clearly is. Conservation my ass..

So now you have resorted to personal attacks on Joe and his wife Bill?

You make a generalised statement about a hotel proposal for Mooloolaba linking Joe and a church to favours for a friend then say "none is suggested". Rubbish, you have made the accusation and cannot back it up except with innuendo. Joe supports the proposal of a good hotel in Mooloolaba however it MUST meet the planning guidelines which are something he has said over and over again but you refuse to report. Instead you go down this track of some conspiracy with a church. What has this church, or any church for that matter, got to do with this? Are you making an accusation of impropriety?

Last night I listened to Bob, Joe and candidates from Divs 6 & 7 present their cases. All of them did well and it was a good night but oh my god, it was held in the Baptist Centre! There must be a link between them and some application they are going to present? Sound silly? Of course it is because normal people can see things for what they are.

Then there is this attack on Terri Irwin and your right as a paper to report it. Yeah, this is a free country and you can report stories but when is fiction fact and fact fiction? Go to the zoo, don't go. Give money to it, don't give money to it. The people’s choice.
Let me write summarize your views,
I hate Joe (and probably Rosanna), George W Bush (don't blame you there), the Iraq war, any development, a building over 10m, churches and educated people from Uni's. Did I miss anyone?

Well I sort of assumed if I wasn't already I am now.

I still stand by my point religion and politics don't mix and we should not be bringing someones beliefs into these discussions. That's all.

Fair enough atapro?

Fair enough JBoast. And I agree wholeheartedly about keeping peoples' religious beliefs out of this political campaign.

Just remember that it was not me or anyone else in these blogs who brought up Joe's religious beliefs. It was Joe himself.

I read Joe Natoli's view on his faith and he was adament that he worships Mary from the Catholic Church Faith.

I am sorry, i was going to vote for him but i will not.

He had used his position to hone into the evangelical churches for his own purposes and to tell you the truth he has done nothing to beautify Nambour or the natural beauty of the coast.

what have we to show for while he has been in power, buildings and more buildings, no natural landscapes as such. All the mismash of buildings in maroochydore to Kawana remind me of the western suburbs of Melbourne, I hate it.

The reason why i chose the Sunshine Coast was for it's natural beauty, it only exists from Coolum to Noosa.

Think about it it, the coast is to be perserved for lovely natural landscaps and it could have been done years ago, but instead we are to swim through the multitudes of buildings to get through.

And you born again christians who support Joe thinking he is a christian , he worships mary, she is an idol, he even thinks buddhists practises are normal.

And for the Story of Terri Aust Zoo, well people that are so dumb, think about this, Terri lost her husband due to unfortunate circumstances, she had to use every opportunity at that time to make his name alive and she did it with very careful marketing that you guys are so stupid to understand.

If she hadn't there would be no visitors coming through. How idiot are australians , always wanting to cut people down, without knowing the real truth.dumb , dumb people.

Atapro I think your first post hit the nail on the head. At this point in the campaign when the polls are not favouring Joe, it IS only about collecting the numbers.

Have your say
