Nambour Disposals
The last time I went to Nambour Disposals it was to get my 14-year-old Max some props to wear for his school project.
The service was fantastic and between them, myself and Max we managed to get an “A”.
This trip was for 11-year-old Jackson who is besotted with anything Army. In fact, his aim in life has progressed from wanting to be a fire ant guy, because “you get to ride a quad!” - to a professional sniper!
We bought a helmet, some army boots, a khaki snow mask that covers your whole face except for a tiny horizontal slit for your eyes, and three metres of camouflage netting.
All week at our house we’ve been finding him in cupboards, behind doors and slowly creeping towards you, unseen of course, across the beige carpet in the lounge room!
Think before you replace that pool fence
Now before I start this story I would like to say that absolutely every council employee I dealt with was tremendously helpful and courteous, but that still didn’t help me understand the predicament I found myself in.
I replaced our four-metre long yuppie glass pool fence with your stereotypical black aluminium one with vertical bars.
That was my first mistake. Did you know that even if you take out one approved pool fence and replace it with another one even utilising the same screw holes you need to apply for a development application?
Failure to do so can attract a fine of $124,875!
I have since received an “Enforcement Notice” and need to complete four pages of form “A” and two pages of form “B” which require and I quote: three copies of drawings to scale drawn by a professional; site plan boundary dimensions; location of fences and buildings; clearance from sewer lines; safety fence in 6 x 6 truncation! And cross-section of pool and slope of site extent of cut and fill and contour plan.
All this for three panels of pool fence that existed in the first place! My question is ... "How do the council go putting a playground next to the Maroochy River at Bli Bli without first putting a pool fence along the entire length of the river bank?”
Valmae Beck
A lot of controversy this week over the rights of convicted murderers in regard to life-saving hospital treatment.
I personally believe that people who commit hideous crimes forfeit their rights as human beings and should perhaps be shown the same dignity and compassion that they afforded their victims.
I am well aware of the argument put forward by many that that makes me no better than them but you know what, I’m okay with that.
My movie
I’m not sure whether you are aware of it or not but I am currently filming a movie in Brisbane and excuse the pun, but I have only a small part.
As far as acting goes, Mel Gibson I’m not (I actually like Jewish people). The producers are filming this one on a very tight budget so the actors are urged to supply their own wardrobe which I did.
If the movie ever makes it to the big screen make sure you stay for the credits so you can read Jamie Dunn dressed by the Life Line shop of Coolum……Thanks ladies.
The formal
Sixteen, nearly 17-year-old Stella had her school formal last weekend.
My god it was a bigger drama than McCleods Daughters!
The hair, the make up, the nails and the dress! Oh and did I say the money for the dress, I could have bought Zimbabwe for what the dress cost.
“By the power of Grey Skull!” I swear Poppy will be learning how to sew from her ninth birthday on.
And in breaking news, if you saw fireworks over Coolum this week it’s because my 18-year-old Joshua finally got a job!

It ended up costing me thousands of dollars and endless phone calls to Council and an approved building inspection company...including a warning about the DA approval and a lecture about being an irresponsible citizen...was I aware of how many toddlers drowned in QLD pools each year ?
In the end, I felt it best to get the Australian Standards approval documents for the glass panels as requested, do the drawings, put in a DA application etc etc.
Now that it is up I don't know if I like the glass panels with aluminium posts. It might look better with some frameless glass panels. I suppose this means going through the whole ludicrous procedure again.
I think that it would be easier if I take it all down and turn the pool into a garden pond. You know, put some water plants and a few fish in it. I could even use it as a dam to water the garden. Then I wouldn't need any fence at all would I ?
