Blog Central: Girl Talk Each week, award-winning journalist Amy Remeikis brings the female perspective on sport, as only she can. Slightly off-beat, sometimes cynical, Amy takes a good look at the world of sport, sports stars and anything to do with bats, balls, tracks, stumps and pools – but with no jock straps in sight!

Who cares that Daz and Joey got married?

October 30 | Amy Remeikis

Just in case you were interested, I’ve just returned from a weekend away with the girls.

We went to Byron Bay.

It was fabulous.

I wore a beach coverall and a bikini for most of the trip. The girls wore similar variations of the same theme.

We ate nachos and salads with a nice sav blanc.

Later we danced the night away at a backpackers’ bar.

I’d tell you who I went with, except you don’t know them. That, and you probably don’t care what I did on the weekend.

And really, that’s fine. I’m not the least bit offended.

To be honest, I’m not overly interested in what you did on the weekend either.

I just thought I would mention it because apparently a couple of sports stars spent the weekend getting married and we are all supposed to be interested.

Which is kind of weird, because I don’t know them personally. Chances are you don’t either.

But there was the Broncos captain, kissing his blushing bride on the front cover of the paper while I enjoyed my latte on Sunday.

It was a lovely photo and if I was a friend or family member, I would be quite chuffed to have such a nice photo of my loved one’s special day.

I’m just not sure it counts as front page news.

I mean, Daz seems like a lovely man and all, but at the end of the day, he just picks up a football and runs with it. I’m not sure that makes him a celebrity.

And I’m pretty sure it doesn’t qualify as news.

And as lovely as his belle looked on her day, I’m not overly interested in the ins and outs of how she felt, what her bridesmaids wore and what they ate on the night.

In fact, I think it is a little weird knowing such intimate details of a stranger’s wedding.

Andrew Johns also tied the knot.

They were a little more private with their details ... but the fact they turned down offers to sell their wedding is still not news.

Darren Lockyer breaking his ankle while walking down the aisle is probably news because that would actually affect his job – you know, the running down the field holding the football bit.

Dazza and Joey having to race each other down the aisle because they had both booked the same church, on the same day, at the same time, would probably be news.

That is, it would be news if they had collided, completely obliterating what was left of Daz’s vocal cords, meaning he could never give a post-game interview ever again.

But tying the knot?

That is not so much news as gossip.

Which makes for a lovely piece in the social pages or even the wedding announcements.

But not the front page.

Splashing a sports star’s nuptials in news bulletins and papers just serves to highlight the difference between them and us. It increases that illusion of celebrity, which both they and we seem to rage against.

And really – do you seriously care what colours the bridesmaid’s shoes were?

(In case you were wondering – they were purple.)

I think it's a load of rubbish. Who cares?. But what does raise my interest is the vows - would young Darren's gravelly rasp have been audible through out the church? Would wifey have even heard his words of love? Wait. Who cares? The football season is over, give the bloke a bit of privacy. Let's focus on the important issues, like the identities of the two blondes who allegedly collected Benny Cousins from the LA international airport and whisked him away in their black Merc...
