Blog Central: Girl Talk Each week, award-winning journalist Amy Remeikis brings the female perspective on sport, as only she can. Slightly off-beat, sometimes cynical, Amy takes a good look at the world of sport, sports stars and anything to do with bats, balls, tracks, stumps and pools – but with no jock straps in sight!

My cranky radar's gone off

July 1 | Amy Remeikis

Two things this week.

And they both involve bad behaviour.

I know – very strange for me, because usually I focus on all that is sweetness and light in the world of sport.

But I have the flu, so it is very dark and twisty (and somewhat congested and headachy) in Amyland at the moment and as such, Girl Talk is a little cranky.

And it’s cranky in the direction of Justin Gimelstob.

Seriously, what was the guy thinking?

He’s just about to be voted onto the ATP board as a players’ representative and gets on national radio and blasts women tennis players for no particular reason.

There are a lot of people who don’t like Anna Kournikova. There are just as many who don’t feel anything either way.

But there is no reason to tell the world that you are going to make her cry at a mixed doubles tournament you are both in just because you feel like it.

The former tennis glam girl may not have done a lot for women’s tennis in so much as she made more of a career of being a beautiful looking player as opposed to a beautiful player who nutted down and brought it on the court.

But having someone who is in a position of influence refer to women players (and former women players) as b*tches and sex-pots is just ridiculous.

Here is what The Times of London had Mr Gimelstob saying about Anna.

“She is a b*tch. Hate’s a very strong word. I despise her to the maximum level just below hate ... I wouldn’t mind having my younger brother, who’s a kind of a stud, nail her and then reap the benefits.

"Tatiana Golovin and Alize Cornet are sexpots, Nicole Vaidisove is “a well developed young lady” and the women’s tour in general has “fewer lesbians now because they’re all Russian chicks. And there’s some other cute ones out there.”

Charming.

The Girl Talk cranky radar is also aimed at pushy parents who don’t know when to stop pushing.

In a desperate bid to get away from my tissue-encrusted bedroom (I know, sounds very inviting) I went for a small walk on the weekend and found myself at a local sporting field.

I stopped and watched some of the little fellas play some league when my attention was diverted by one of the mums going absolutely nutso from the sideline.

The woman just kept screaming ‘get in there, get in there’ to a boy who up until this woman began screaming, looked like he was having a pretty good time.

He fumbled a couple of times when he did get the ball, but he was just loving being out there. After the screaming fest, his smile fell and his head stayed down.

Seriously, let the kids play.

It’s a game, not the end of life as we know it.

Now if you excuse me, I need to go remove my sinus cavities. Or failing that, go back to bed.

Surely that tool won't still be elected to represent players! Good on you for being cranky about this stuff Amy. What players is he supposed to represent? Just the men? I am sure even many of them wouldn't want to be associated with an @ss like that.

My teenagers have played soccer and footy for many years and I have had to watch so many parents like that. It's pathetic. They obviously have no life of their own and have to live their dreams through their kids. Or maybe its just an ego thing. One of them was so bad that we took a video of her just for laughs. She was on the sidelines drunk and screaming at her son, the rest of the team and hurling abuse at our team as well. These were 15 year old rugby union players and that poor son of hers must have been so ashamed to call her mum.

There are just no winners when parents take it as seriously as that. The kids don't feel good about it and I hope the parents don't intentionally mean to make them feel pressured, but it is time to take a step back and look at what they are doing. I mean it's kid's sport! It's meant to be a bit of fun.

And to borrow one of Mr Gimelstob's words, he is a douche
