Blog Central: Law and Order Damon Locantro has made a name for himself on the Sunshine Coast defending people charged with breaking the law. His practice, Locantro Lawyers, specialises in criminal defence but also offers services to those facing action by a government department. Damon has 15 years experience in criminal law and was formerly a NSW prosecutor and member of the NSW Police Service.

Anthony Mundine is a great role model

February 28 | Damon Locantro

I fell asleep just before the main event last night – the Mundine v Hamdan fight, that is.

However, I was awake to see the presentation of $50,000 from the Mundine Camp, Sonny Bill Williams and Ben Cousins to the St Vincent’s Hospital. The money will be used to fund Gorman House, a drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre.

I have always admired Anthony Mundine. He is a superb athlete and a good role model. He does not drink, smoke or take drugs.

He has so much discipline, self-confidence and motivation to get to where he wants to go.

What a great bloke for giving our local Olympic hopeful, Wade Foley, a couple of rounds. It only took a phone call and the Man said, “Come on down”.

Now he has shown a very generous side with his financial donation to such a good cause. A group of high-profile athletes bringing the issue of drug and alcohol rehabilitation into the spotlight can only have a positive impact on other people.

There is strong interest in inviting Anthony to the Sunshine for his next training camp.

We rarely have current sporting stars on the Coast for us to meet, and having him here would lift the profile of the region and boxing.

Jamie Myer and I brought Kosta Tszyu to the Sunshine Coast for lunch last year and it was a great success.

If there are any business people out there that would like to join a proposal the bring Anthony here, let me know.

What, "We rarely have current sporting stars on the Coast for us to meet".
Let me jog your memory,
LOCAL;
2 world champion womens lawn bowlers, 2 world champion surfers, several world champion surf life savers, many Olympic & Commonwealth Games champions, world super bike riders, Australian motocross champion, etc, etc, etc
NATIONAL:Manly, Auckland & Broncos RL teams, Western Bulldogs AFL, Australian Swimming Squad (regularly), Australian mens & womens Water Polo teams, National rowing & canoe teams,
INTERNATIONAL; RU, RL, soccer, swim, diving teams,

Yep, we really are starving of sportstars here on the coast. You were obviously not at the Sports Star Awards in earlier this month where there was at absolute stunning line up of local State, National & International sports stars.

Damon you have no idea what is happening on the coast in regards to sport so may I suggest you be one of the business people you speak about and support what we currently have.

For example, how about you put money into the Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles where at least the benefits stay on the coast.

We don't need Mr Mundine for recognition, we already have it.

I thought this blog was about issues concerning law and order, like the blog's name suggests?

What does promoting a potential boxing training camp have to do with law & order?

If there are any business people out there that would like to join a proposal to change the name of the blog, maybe we should let Damon know.

Well done on bringing a sports star to a local business luncheon - the lucky few wealthy business people must have enjoyed their tax deductible lunch.

Instead of organising a business luncheon or 'training camp' with Mundine why don't you get together with business people and donate money to fund a similar drug rehab centre on the Sunshine Coast.

Donate money and everyone thinks you are a fantastic role model - it works for Ben Cousins, bikies who give kids toys every year - it may even work for you Mr Locantro.

Wasn't Mundine the one attacking Cathy Freeman as being a "sellout" to her people? I can't see how thats a good role model. I know its the norm in the sport of boxing but his face to face standoff's with opponents strike me as more childish than intimidating. He seems to speak volumes about many matters most of which he knows nothing about pretty much like our columnist.

Is this story really about Mundine ? This isn't a promotion for the Hulett vs Dickson bout next week is it.

Tom has taken to copying "The Man's" image in the media. This is very suspicious.

He may be a good athlete but he falls well short of being a good role model. After 9/11 he said the Americans brought it on themselves... he's not the sharpest tool in the shed!
