Paul Munnings has been the Daily’s sports editor since 2001, joining the paper after spending 10 years at the Tweed Daily News. Unfortunately work prevents him from playing more golf and watching more sport on TV – or writing a longer blurb for his blog! Your favourite Broncos moments
| Paul Munnings
The Daily has been asking readers for their favourite Brisbane Broncos moment from the past 20 seasons. Our panel of league experts – columnist Tony Durkin, former Bronco Willie Carne and sports editor Paul Munnings – will select the best story, and the author will receive a framed 2006 Broncos commemorative premiership jersey, valued at $1995, plus four tickets to the official 20th anniversary match against Manly this weekend.
Entries must be at the Daily’s Maroochydore (corner of Newspaper Place and Dalton Drive) office by noon tomorrow 31 July. Here are some of the entries we have already received:
I me some of the team as well as Wayne Bennett in 1994 at a resort in Sydney.
I was there for a wedding and they were there to play footy in Sydney.
I spoke with Wayne, Alfie, the Walters brothers, Steve Renouf and Julian O’Neill.
To this day, I enjoy telling my sons about meeting the players and I still carry Alfie’s autograph in my wallet!
Katrina McMillan, Palmwoods
My favourite Broncos memory was the 1992 premiership when Steve Renouf ran off a Kev Walters pass to run the full length of the field and score a memorable try against St George.
Kevin Hamer,Nambour
My favourite memory is not so much about the players but that the Broncos club treated my family and I with respect and kindness which I had thought was something that was pretty rare these days.
It’s not always about the game, but the treatment of the public who make the atmosphere.
Congratulations to the club from the Cirson family.
Linda Cirson,Gympie
My best memory of the past 20 seasons is the 2006 grand final, Brisbane v Melbourne.
It was a fitting way for Shane Webcke to retire. A great man, a great game, a great career.
Warren Sullivan, Buderim
My favourite Broncos moment was when my team, the Wests Tigers, smashed them 34-6 in the 2005 semi-final.
M Dale, Mooloolaba
When Shaun Berrigan scored his first ever try.
Kyle Born, Moffat Beach
My favourite Broncos memory was when they played the Panthers and Gorden Tallis fired up at Ben Ross. Old bull sorting out the young bull.
Sean Mayfield, Buderim
My five-year-old boy is a huge Broncos fan.
Taking him to his first Broncos live game at Suncorp, he has never sat so still for so long.
The look and the smile on his face was absolutely priceless. To me that was what it is all about.
He tells us he is the next Darren Lockyer. Watch out.
Julie Pyne, Tewantin
I have two memories that stand out.
Travelling down by hire car to the 1992 grand final and the first of many premierships, going to the game and flying home drinking champagne the air hosties gave us.
The other was the last game at Lang Park against Newcastle before moving to ANZ Stadium. The atmosphere that day was electric.
Stewart Manders, Pomona
It would have to the ’92 grand final win after being the minor premiers and only in the competition for four years.
Others love to hate us but the Broncos, that’s my team.
Phil Newton, Mountain Creek
I would have to say Locky’s field goal against the Titans.
Not in a billion attempts would you ever see a ball hit one side post, then bounce over to the other one and fall just over the crossbar to win the game.
I was blown away.
For the ball to hit the other post, knowing the shape of the ball, can only make you wonder who is really in control of the game’s outcome. Spooky.
Peter Hurley, Castaways
This might sound a bit late in the Broncos’ 20 years, but I haven’t been around for all of those years.
So my favourite Broncos moment would have to be this year when the Broncos are defending premiers and not having the greatest start of the season.
One morning the headlines read “Broncos hit rock bottom”.
Lockyer knew he had to turn it around and make that afternoon’s game against the Knights count.
That afternoon the Broncos played the best they could and flogged the Knights 71-6, making it one of their biggest wins ever.
That team doesn’t know how to say the phrase “give up”.
Stuart Thompson, Buderim
My favourite memory would be last year’s grand final.
My dad rang me to ask if I wanted his ticket to fly down and see them play.
It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be at a packed Telstra Stadium and see my team win.
It was even better leaving the stadium and calling “Go the Broncos” at passing Melbourne supporters.
Ben Walker, Dicky Beach
In 1992, I was travelling in Israel when I spotted a guy on a bus who was an Aussie and he told me that the Broncos had just beaten St George to win their first premiership.
Everyone around me thought I was crazy when I started yelling and screaming with delight.
John Calcino, Maroochydore
The two years that St George made the grand final and we beat them both times.
My husband is an avid Saints supporter so the trip back from Sydney was thrilling for some, but very quiet for others.
Go the Broncos.
P Morris, Landsborough
Finally! After three hours in line, getting sunburnt at the 2007 fan day, I had my favourite cap autographed and photos as well.
It was awesome.
They’re not just anyone or any team. They are the Broncos! That’s my team! My heroes! My idols!
Note to self: Next year bring sunscreen.

In later years the attending of games at ANZ and more recently Suncorp Stadium would have me excited from when I woke up until I took my seat at the game. Moving into my late teens I was excited as every year the Broncos fought out the finals. Their demolition of the competition in the Super League titles (Tesltra Cup & World Club Challenge) and the inaugural NRL title was thrilling from February to September.
I have fond memories of the team from a community sense. The Broncos have supported grassroots sport complementing what other organisations are responsible for. The numerous schoolboy competitions, the training camps and the club visits from current NRL stars boost the playing of sport in the community as well as showing the strong profile that the club has in our state.
The Broncos are today a club that rivals the Rabbitohs and St George in the supporter ranks. These clubs, like all teams, have tireless supporters that turn out in numbers even through the rough years. The Broncos have this not only in Brisbane but throughout Queensland - just look at the ticket sales in Townsville for the derby against the Cowboys.
I am proud to be a season ticket holder in 2007. My devotion to a team that breeds a culture for personal development and team success could not be spent wiser any where else. The Broncos repay me every week that they aim up on the field and develop young men off of it.
But back to the question, I guess my favourite memory of the Brisbane Broncos is in the knowledge that no matter what happens in the premiership race each year, the Broncos have the ability to create new and exciting memories every time they take the field.
