Qld doesn’t need Locky

April 14 | Paul Munnings

Some lessons learned from the last three days of sport.
1. It doesn’t matter if Darren Lockyer isn’t fit for the start of the State of Origin series.

It’s hard to believe, but the Maroons aren’t in desperate need of having “Locky”, our best player for a decade, for game one.

The rugby league worm has fully turned.

Now it’s the Blues who can’t find a halfback they can rely on and Queensland has the best three No.7s in the game – Johnathan Thurston, Scott Prince and Cooper Cronk.

If Lockyer isn’t right for the May 21 game in Sydney, put Thurston at five-eighth and give the red-hot Prince his chance at halfback. The bloke deserves it.
Still, maybe the selectors will keep Thurston in the No.7 and give Greg Inglis the No.6.

It’s a happy situation to be in.

As for NSW, Braith Anasta will be their five-eighth but there’s a big field of contenders for who will play alongside him.

His Roosters teammate Mitchell Pearce may be their best option.

2. Don’t go to bed when the Brisbane Lions are losing by 47 points in the third quarter even if it’s away from the Gabba and the rain is hosing down.

Yep, that’s what this columnist did on Saturday night couldn’t quite believe the Lions had managed to produce a 20-point victory against Port.

Of course, the Lions have a J Brown and a D Bradshaw who are both capable of booting bag fulls of goals.

That sort of win should spark a great run for Brisbane.

3. Brandt Snedeker is a top bloke.

The American golfer impressed plenty of people with his friendly demeanour when he played at the Australian PGA Championship at Hyatt Coolum last year and the first three rounds of the Masters have shown he’s exactly the same, even under the pressure of playing in arguably the greatest of all majors.

He looks like a grown-up Dennis The Menace with longer hair and isn’t one of those top American pros who never travels overseas.

With no Australians having a chance of winning, I hope he can get a green jacket this morning, although it will clash with his freckles.

4. Open radio microphones are dangerous.

Listeners to one Sunshine Coast station on Saturday morning, just before 10, were hearing the sounds of Bon Jovi when, for some reason, the airwaves fell silent mid-song.

What came next was a rasping cough and the following conversation between the two on-air personalities, who thought their listeners were still hearing what they were hearing.

Personality 1: This is good music.

Personality 2: For a change.

Maybe they will have some explaining to do.

Have your say
