The Stockland Park Stadium, if it gets built sometime this century, will be a “white elephant” as one Sunshine Coast sporting identity claimed last week.
FALSE. Instead of worrying if anyone’s using the stadium, the problem will be trying to keep everyone who will want to use it, happy.
Take the weekend just gone for instance.
The Stingrays’ Premier Rugby side was on the stadium field on Saturday afternoon, while over on the old No.1 ground, the Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles were playing FOGs Cup league against Burleigh.
Then yesterday, Sunshine Coast Fire played a Queensland State League football clash against Logan.
These clubs – one which leads its competition (the Fire), another which is having its best season (the Stingrays) and the other which wants to be in the Queensland Cup (the Eagles) – should be nurtured and deserve better facilities than they, and their sponsors and supporters, have to deal with at the moment.
Throw in an annual NRL pre-season game, a Manly Sea Eagles “home” NRL fixture, A-League pre-season matches, rugby representative games like the Queensland XV v Auckland match earlier this month, and the possibility of AFL pre-season matches and the stadium will be getting plenty of use – and that’s just from the football codes.
Jake Friend’s NRL debut showed he has a bright future at the Roosters.
TRUE. The teenager topped the tackle count with 32 in the win against the Bulldogs on Friday night and looked at home at dummy-half.
He’s gone from playing with the Noosa Pirates to the NRL in 12 months, showing what is possible if you have ability and use it.
There would be other youngsters on the Coast just like him.
Joel Moon will be better off at the Warriors than at Brisbane.
TRUE. The former Caloundra Shark’s NRL career has never made it past second gear at Brisbane.
Like an old Coast favourite in Casey McGuire, Moon’s been in and out of the top team in his first couple of seasons and has never had a chance at settling at one spot.
Hopefully getting away to NZ will give him some new life and Ivan Cleary can produce better results than Wayne Bennett has been able to conjure out of a talented kid.
Chris Vermeulen would be better off going back to the World Superbike Championship.
FALSE. The Yandina flyer’s 2008 campaign has been a major disappointment so far – he’s ninth in the championship and with 57 points, is more than 100 from top spot – but it’s MotoGP that Aussie sports fans take most interest in, and care about, as far as motorcycling goes.
His profile will remain high if he stays in MotoGP and hopefully better results will be on the way in the second half of the year.
The Brisbane Lions will make the AFL finals and have a good shot at winning the premiership.
TRUE AND FALSE. Their next four games – Essendon (away), West Coast Eagles (home), Richmond (away) and North Melbourne (at Carrara) – are all in the “very winnable” category and they will need to win at least three because their final month includes games against three of the flag favourites – Hawthorn, Western Bulldogs and Sydney.
However if you lose to Melbourne at the MCG in June, there is little chance you can beat someone like Geelong at the MCG on the last Saturday in September.
Anyone can beat anyone in the NRL.
FALSE. The Cowboys can’t beat anyone at the moment, even Souths with a 24-point lead in the second half.
A wooden-spoon is on the way just three years after being in the grand final.
