Will Bennett go to the dogs?

March 1 | Paul Munnings

You would expect Steve Price to know what’s going on at the Bulldogs.

Even though he’s now enjoying being skipper of the Warriors, the big Queenslander has a soft spot for the Doggies, where he was one of the club’s most popular players of the past 20 years.

Price was one of the special guests at the Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles’ Platinum 100 Club launch on Thursday night and was quizzed on stage on a number of topics by Daily league columnist Tony Durkin.

Asked to give a true or false answer to the statement “Wayne Bennett will coach the Cowboys next year”, Price replied “false”, with the added information that he thought the soon-to-go Broncos coach would end up at the Bulldogs.

The prop was rather sheepish when he then realised he had just predicted the demise of his former coach Steve Folkes and then tried a little bit of a backtrack.

Anyone for golf?

They are a proactive lot at Club Pelican, and PR minded, too.

After reading in the Daily that Sea Eagles stalwart Steve Menzies was keen for a game of golf while on the Coast for last night’s NRL trial, Andy Lowen at Club Pelican was on the front foot, immediately offering the “Beaver” and three of his mates a complimentary round.

Unfortunately, a combination of our poor weather and a full book of commitments prevented Menzies and co from taking up the offer.

However, the keen golfers – Menzies, Matt Orford and Jamie Lyon – hope to return for another trial next year and have taken a raincheck on Club Pelican.

Physio comes in from the cold

While the Coast has been hit by a wet and unseasonably cool summer, Noosa-based physiotherapist Peter Hogg has been enjoying a cold winter.

He’s recently returned to work with his local clients after completing a World Cup tour through North America with the Australian freestyle ski team.

Among the athletes to have benefited from his skilful hands were Torino Olympic Games moguls gold medallist Dale Begg-Smith and aerials duo Jacqui Cooper and Lydia Lassila.

Peter will again be involved with the Aussie squad at the 2009 World Championships in Japan next year and the Olympics in Vancouver the following year.

Don’t miss the dynamic duo

Norm Provan, who was recently named one of rugby league’s greatest 100 players of the past century, will be joined by his little mate Arthur Summons at next week’s second get-together of the Sunshine Coast’s Full Time Club.

The duo, famously photographed together after the muddy 1963 Sydney grand final, an image which became the basis for the Winfield Cup and NRL trophies, will be interviewed during the evening.

The function, from 5pm to 7pm on Thursday, March 13, will be held at the Mooloolaba Surf Club. The cost is $20 each, which includes two drinks, a raffle ticket and great finger food.

Don joins Men of League

Long-time Tewantin resident and rugby league identity Don McAskill has been appointed as the Noosa district delegate for the Sunshine Coast branch of the Men of League organisation.

Don’s been around league for half a century and had playing stints at Wests and Murgon, which included representing Wide Bay, before concentrating on coaching seniors in Townsville and a string of junior teams.

The Men of League, whose membership has grown to more than 6000, raises funds for the families of former rugby league players, coaches and administrators who are going through hard times.
