First impressions are lasting impressions

September 3 | Michelle Hamer

Research suggests you have two seconds to create the first impression, and that it will be the lasting impression people will retain.

Why? Because people’s perceptions are not easily changed and you are likely to keep projecting the same image.

The way you look and what that conveys is (rightly or wrongly) linked to your performance, so it is important that you recognise that the way you look affects the way other people perceive your work.

Cultivating your image means defining and focusing more sharply on who you really are. This doesn’t mean you should blot out the characteristics of your personality that make you an individual. The answer is to make sure that the image you project is an asset rather than a liability.

How do you do this?

1. Know what image you want to project. To do this, identify successful people in the business world and consider if they are creative, energetic, innovative, enthusiastic, laidback, efficient, sensitive caring, etc. Now reflect on how you think you portray yourself – you may want to work with a friend on this exercise.

2. Dress appropriately and well. Compile and analyse your own personal dress and grooming habits. How well are your shoes, hair, handbag/briefcase, cosmetics, jewellery, etc, cared for.

3. What you say and how you say it are important factors in image-building. Spend as much time listening as talking, and make oral and written communication as positive as you can.

4. Always try to:

  • Be the first to say hello;
  • Never be casual with your greeting;
  • Put a smile on your face to greet people;
  • Use the other person’s name;
  • Do your homework when meeting with someone;
  • Show interest in what the other person is saying;
  • Observe the basic rules of politeness and etiquette.

The key to image building is to start early. It is easier to build up a professional positive image than it is to change one.

In a nutshell, act like a professional and always look the part.

Have your say
