Why are you in business?

May 21 | Michelle Hamer

This is a question often asked of small business owners. Their answers usually range from:
* I can do it better than my boss …
* I can make more money …
* I don’t want to work full time …
* I want more flexibility ... and the list goes on.

Well since my last article I have truly understood (and appreciated) one of these reason to own my own business – having the flexibility to work when I want to. Let me explain.

Just over a month ago my partner had a serious operation – 12 days in hospital and now recuperating at home and likely to be at home for at least for another two to three weeks.

And I wanted/needed to be the nursemaid. Owning my business has allowed me flexibility to work at unusual hours and only when I needed to.

Another interesting point, this period has tested my values. An question that is just as important for small business owners (and every business person) is “What are your values?”

People will propose trust, respect for others, success, recognition (by others), etc. I have always talked about family, health, success etc. But you see, I love work, so it has been challenging to step away from work and to step up to my values.

I invite you to consider why you own a business and what your values are.

Then consider sharing these with your team to make sure you have the right team and that you are all on the same path to success.

PS – Make sure you tell your clients what is happening in your world. I did and my key clients have been sincerely supportive and patient with me. Thank you.

Have your say
