With a great line-up of talent on the Daily’s sports desk, Jon Tuxworth reckons he only gets a call-up when one of the star players is away – as is the case with his sporting exploits. Known affectionately as ‘Splinters’ at high school, his offering from the humble position on the bench is always worth a read. Unbeaten, but still a loser

When a team goes through a regular season undefeated, a minor premiership is more often than not guaranteed.
Apart from in one game: football. The roundball version.
Incredibly, unless there is a massive upset in the final month of the Caloundra RSL League, either Maroochydore or Buderim will complete the 18-match season without a loss to their name.
And as a result, one of the competition heavyweights will walk away without the premiership.
The premiership is regarded by most as the biggest prize in football. Even bigger than a grand final win (the championship) which most punters tend to remember more.
To describe going through a season without your colours being lowered and still not claiming the game’s ultimate prize as deflating is a massive understatement.
It’s much easier to reflect on a trophy-less season when you can mull over a bad loss or two when you’re making a goose of yourself on Mad Monday.
It appears either the Swans or Wanderers players will skol their first schooner in four weeks’ time, ask themselves what went wrong and inevitably come up with nothing.
Buderim take on Beegees, Coolum, Caloundra SPU and Noosa to finish off the season. Only Caloundra SPU look to have any chance of securing the three points against them, but Buderim will have home ground advantage.
Maroochydore are also drawn to play CSPU, in the final round, but will start massive favourites for their other remaining fixtures against Kawana, Beegees and Coolum.
GIVE THE KID A GO
The Sunshine Coast AFL community rejoiced when Caloundra product Daniel Dzufer made his AFL debut for the Brisbane Lions against Port Adelaide a few weeks ago.
Strong performances for the Suncoast Lions in the AFLQ Velocity Cup basically demanded that Dzufer, who began the year as a Lions rookie, be promoted to the seniors list.
Perhaps it’s time for fellow Caloundra junior and Fremantle rookie-lister Chris Smith to follow suit.
Despite being rated one of the premiership favourites before a ball was bounced this season, last year’s preliminary finalists have been the biggest disappointments of the competition.
According to several reliable sources, Smith’s attitude to training and football in general is impressive for a 19-year-old, and he has been playing the house down for Swan Districts in the WAFL.
Come on Dockers, give the kid a go.
