With a great line-up of talent on the Daily’s sports desk, Jon Tuxworth reckons he only gets a call-up when one of the star players is away – as is the case with his sporting exploits. Known affectionately as ‘Splinters’ at high school, his offering from the humble position on the bench is always worth a read. All hail holy Hull

I woke up on Monday morning to be greeted by a flu so vicious, I couldn’t rule out the possibility I had contracted the Hendra virus.
But the biggest danger to my health was when I turned on Fox Sports News to see what’s been happening in this big wide world of sports.
When ‘Katherine Hull wins her first LPGA title at the Canadian Open’ scrolled across the bottom of the screen, I nearly choked on my cornflakes (it was actually Sanitarium Light ‘n’ Tasty with Triple Berry, but you get my drift).
The Sunrise Beach golfer went into the final round six strokes behind overnight leader Yani Tseng.
To win, she needed to put together a strong final round and hope her Taiwanese rival crumbled under the pressure. Thankfully, both happened.
Hull had no right to win the tournament.
The Daily featured a story on her with the headline ‘Hull poised for tilt at first title’ in Monday’s paper.
But in reality, I at least didn’t really believe it.
Coming from six strokes down with 18 holes left means holding the trophy aloft at the end of the day is partly out of your hands.
Basically everything needs to fall your way.
Right now I’m beginning to wonder if there really is a God after all.
A devout Christian, Hull has revealed her desire to help build a school in poverty-stricken nation Rwanda.
She even visited the country a few months back as part of the LPGA Tour’s ‘Golf Fore Africa’ to help them out.
With her bank balance now $390,000 healthier, there may be some more poor Africans getting a decent education sooner rather than later.
Her golf bag bears the World Vision logo.
Her faith allows her to believe every time she walks out on course.
During the second round when she equalled the course record of 65, Hull revealed afterward that she and her caddie John Powell were reciting Bible verses from Galatians.
Winning that first title for any athlete is the most difficult of all. But it is especially the case for a golfer.
Just ask American Phil Mickleson, who had to carry the tag of ‘best golfer never to win a major’ until he finally got the monkey off his back.
And when he did, those titles just kept on coming.
Hopefully it’s the same for Hull.
“Now you, brothers and sisters, like Isaac, are children of promise.”
That’s from Galatians chapter four, verse 28 (by the way I am far from a religious person, Google is a great thing).
Not sure whether that one came up on the back nine on Friday, but our Kathy is just beginning to realise her potential.
