Blog Central: Super sub With a great line-up of talent on the Daily’s sports desk, Jon Tuxworth reckons he only gets a call-up when one of the star players is away – as is the case with his sporting exploits. Known affectionately as ‘Splinters’ at high school, his offering from the humble position on the bench is always worth a read.

Why I'm barracking for the Sharks

September 24 | Jon Tuxworth

I have already made it known to my bosses that should Canberra ever win another premiership, they shouldn’t expect to see me in the office – or sober – for a few days.

In the unlikely event of that occurring, I could possibly wake up in November on a barge ship headed for the Cayman Islands with no idea how I got there.

But when the Raiders were eliminated in the first week of the finals, I was time to jump on another team’s bandwagon.

The process to achieve this is relatively easy – simply run a line through the finals teams you hate the most and continue on a sliding scale until one lucky contender remains.

For me, the Broncos were the first to feel the wrath of my red pen.

It comes down to the rivalry shared between Brisbane and Canberra in the ’90s, when they were clearly the two best teams in the competition.

The recent allegations against some of the Broncos players only vindicated that decision.

The next team to be dumped was Manly – if you don’t barrack for them, you hate their guts (although they are to be applauded for their association with Sunshine Coast league).

Melbourne were the third to bite the bullet. They won it last year and, let’s face it, if they win they’ll probably be welcomed home at Tullamarine Airport by two pensioners and a homeless guy they’ve paid to wear their jersey.

Bearing in mind that Canberra were eliminated in the first week of the play-offs, that initial culling left three options – the Warriors, Cronulla and the Roosters.

The Roosters were next to fall by the wayside.

I’d started to warm to the Roosters after laidback Freddy took over the coaching reins, but the fact that a tri-colours win would make Phil “I look like the Muddle-Headed Wombat” Gould happy just didn’t sit right with me.

The Kiwis visited the scrapheap next.

The fact the Warriors’ upset of the Storm ended Canberra’s season isn’t the only reason, but it didn’t help their cause.

And let’s face it, regardless of what they’ve achieved in the finals, they only won 13 of 24 matches during the regular season and don’t deserve the premiership.

This leaves Cronulla.

For me, picking the boys from Sutherland as my September team wasn’t really that hard a decision.

Everyone loves an underdog.

And the Sharkies certainly fit that bill.

Steve Carell once played a bloke down on his luck with the ladies in the movie 40-Year-Old Virgin.

Well, Cronulla have gone one “better” – they have a 41-year-old cherry they’re just dying to get rid of.

Since their inception into the then NSWRL in 1967, Cronulla are yet to win a premiership.

They lost two grand finals to Manly in the ’70s, and also went down to the Broncos in the Super League decider in 1997.

When I thought about what it would be like to support a team for 41 seasons and not taste the thrill of a premiership, the Sharkies just had to be the bandwagon I’d hop on.

They’re a great chance to break that hoodoo, too.

They must have sat back in glee watching the Storm and Broncos bash the snot out of each other on Saturday night, while they enjoyed the week off.

They meet a vulnerable Melbourne on Friday at the SFS, who are already without Jeremy Smith and probably Ryan Hoffman, with skipper Cameron Smith needing a win at the judiciary tonight to take his place.

So, to Sunshine Coast product Ben Ross and his Sharks teammates, I wish you good luck.

I hope you bust that premiership cherry.

It's not that hard supporting the Sharks. I have always been proud of their do it yourself local content and spirit (except maybe the Anderson years when we sold our soul in pursuit of a premiership).
When people point out that we have never won a premiership I just tell them that the Shire won 11 premierships in a row as part of St George and the Sharks were only created in 1967 in order to end that dominance, which of course less than coincidently ended that year. If you think it hard never to win a premiership imagine what it would be like watching us win 52 in a row.

52 In a row ~ turn it up ~ no wonder both Cronulla and St.George have had low attendance over the years... all there supporters are like you, in the USA.. Living over there isn't rubbing off is it ~ 52 in a row....

Wow Jon... you haven't had a great run for picking the winners in either code of footy this finals series.

As a Manly supporter, please confirm you are cheering for Melbourne Storm in next weekends Grandfinal please.

That will lift my confidence of a Manly victory greatly! ;)

Have your say
