Is technology in charge of you?

June 19 | Peter Daley

Feel everything is speeding up?

Don't seem to have enough time in the day to do everything?

Well, welcome to the modern technological world!

(Read the free online book at the bottom of this blog, and learn to RELAX.)

In a modern world, your brain has to constantly process huge amounts of information, at a speed it wasn't biologically designed for.

Sitting in that cave in the stone age, our ancestors didn't have the constant stream of mobile phone calls, emails, and SMS messages to deal with, plus the barrage of information from, TV, radio, and the Internet.

Most people are in information overload, plus modern devices offer so many features and choices, making the correct decision, “Which button to push?” can generate decision anxiety.

If you make the wrong choice, the thing could stop working, and you could spend lots of time and money, getting it back into working order.

Modern technology is everywhere, and the majority of people don't know how to use it properly, so it causes a lot of frustration.

Also, it is built to a price of cheap, and cheaper, so it's all designed to fail at some point, (if you're lucky, three to five years) and usually when you need it most.

On top of all this, you now have people like me, writing scary blogs about how modern technology is making it easy for the bad guys to pinch your money :-)

Here are my previous blogs

The average person is on the verge of being overwhelmed, when the technology is working, and in meltdown when it isn't.

I now make sure I put a free book on Stress Management, which I wrote as a community service, on the desktop of all computers I work on.

It's a matter of you being in charge of the technology, and not the technology being in charge of you.

Realise the limitations of the technology, and don't rely on it. It's not all its cracked up to be!

When the phone rings, or your messenger program rings, do you drop everything and run to it? Do the rest of the family end up with foot prints all over them, as you scramble to the phone?

Wise family members have learnt to step out of your way. This is also generally the only time you get exercise.

If your mobile rings, do you immediately answer it, even if you're driving? Naughty!

Do you sleep with your mobile phone next to you?

Do you rant and rave at the computer, or mobile, when it doesn't work the way you want it to? Life is a misery for anyone unlucky enough to be close by, during one of these incidences!

If your answer to any of these scenarios is yes, technology is in charge of you.

Working in a modern world is all about balance. Having a quite time everyday, when you turn off all the devices, and don't answer the phone etc. is a good idea.

If you can't do this, you're a serious case, and need professional help. :-) This could be the vast majority of the population!

Here are the golden rules to having a stress-free lifestyle.

Relax. Have a set period everyday which you spend practising relaxation for 15 to 20 minutes, or more.

Eat a well balanced diet, with plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables and whole grains. Relax and enjoy your food when eating.

Liquids. Drink plenty of liquids during the day. They help flush the toxins out of your body. (No, alcohol is not counted.)

Attitude. Having a positive attitude to life, is important to your health and happiness.

eXercise. It is important to do 15 to 20 minutes of exercise every day. It keeps the body oiled and working well, plus it burns up that excess adrenaline, pumping around your body.

Yes, I realise that the above list spells out RELAX. Ok, except for the eXercise word. The other golden rule is to be flexible in your thinking!

Read my free book online here, to get the complete story. You can give it to as many people as you like, it's free. You can even put it on your web site if you like.

Have your say
