Speeding drivers offer some quick excuses

May 13 | Coast police

Three drivers caught speeding in different parts of the Sunshine Coast yesterday morning had some creative excuses for the officers who pulled them over.

The trio were all travelling at least 35kmh over the speed limit.

The first offender was a 44-year-old Blackstone man clocked doing 151kmh in a 110kmh zone on the Bruce Highway at Cooroy at 10am.

He told officers he was driving a new car and didn’t realise how fast he was going

Less than an hour later, a 31-year-old Margate man was caught doing 95kmh in a 60kmh zone on the Yandina-Coolum Road at Yandina.

His excuse was that he was in a hurry to collect his fiancée from Coolum and to see her ultrasound of their twins.

And at 11.25am, police stopped a 25-year-old Buderim man driving at 117kmh in an 80kmh zone on the Nambour Connection Road at Nambour.

He said he was a mechanic and was test-driving a Nissan 350Z sports car.

Unfortunately for the hapless trio, their excuses didn’t help them escape punishment.

The first driver was issued with a $700 fine, lost eight demerit points and will have his licence suspended for six months, while the father-to-be and the mechanic must each pay a $350 fine and lost six demerit points.
