Speedster on a phone nabbed in school zone

May 20 | Coast police

A 58-year-old Pelican Waters woman has been caught driving more than 30 kilometres above the speed limit – while talking on her mobile phone – in a school zone, shortly after students were dismissed.

The woman was recorded travelling at 72kmh in 40kmh school zone outside Beerwah State School, about 3.15pm one afternoon last week.

A marked Beerwah police car conducting a routine school patrol clocked the woman’s speed with a mobile radar and issued her with two traffic infringement tickets amounting to a $575 fine.

“Clearly the driver has little regard for the road laws and the risks that she poses to the school community of Beerwah when behaving in such a manner,” Sunshine Coast police Inspector Darryl White said.

“There were children and vehicles in the area. Certainly the potential is there if a child walked out in front of a car, given the speed she was travelling, there could have been certain injuries or even death.

“It’s very concerning that people would drive in such manner in the vicinity of a school.

“Driving at such a speed with children in the area, and the fact that she was inattentive because she was driving whilst on a mobile phone, is a high risk practice, which has the potential to result in serious injury or death.”

The woman also lost nine demerit points from her licence.

Law catches up with disqualified driver
Police from Mooloolaba Beat were attending to office duties when they heard the screech of tyres and a large bang outside of their office.

On investigating the noise, police observed a three-vehicle traffic incident at the intersection of Parkyn Parade and River Esplanade.

The driver of one of the cars had rear-ended a motorcyclist at the intersection, who was then pushed into a sedan stopped in front of him.

A motorcycle rider, who was also involved, suffered minor injuries and was transported to Nambour General Hospital for treatment.

The female driver of the first car provided a positive roadside blood alcohol test and further testing at Maroochydore station indicated she had a blood alcohol reading of 0.112%.

Further checks also revealed that female driver was disqualified from driving by the court, when she was convicted for drink driving in March 2008.
