Some people are finding it hard to get the message that “if you drink and drive you’re a bloody idiot”.
Maybe they should think of their wallet. A taxi home is far cheaper than the drink-driving fine and loss of licence.
It is also cheaper than medical fees if you’re involved in an accident, and costs less than the repairs to your car, which will not be covered by insurance.
But the message seems to be lost on some people, irrespective of their age.
Last weekend, a young man caught at Caloundra had a reading of 0.203% – more than four times the legal limit.
Then on Monday night, Kawana police caught a 72-year-old man driving all over the road on the Nicklin Way at Currimundi.
The wandering driver took some kilometres to pull over because he wasn’t aware that the police car – with siren and lights blazing – was behind him.
If he wasn’t aware of something that obvious, what other things did he miss or, more to the point, not miss?
He recorded 0.150%, three times the legal limit, and immediately had his licence suspended until his appearance in court … but he did ask police for a “discount” because he was a pensioner.
The request was denied.
