The greatest scares ever!

October 24 | Mark Chapman

The great thing about a genre like Horror is that everyone has their favourite movie. That one standout that had that extra few litres of blood, that one part that made you jump out of your skin and nervously look over your shoulder on the way home.

As part of our Halloweek special, here are some suggestions for the top films.

The Nightmare on Elm Street films were always winners for me. In fact, years ago in South Africa, there used to be a public holiday called Kruger Day.

Although it was about a long dead head of state and the spelling was missing an "e", it was, of course, the perfect excuse for a Freddy Krueger Elm Street marathon.

In what now seems like a bad script for a Scream movie, imagine a group of teenagers watching super-scary flicks all day - the perfect excuse to get your girlfriend to snuggle up real close - usually punctuated by someone running from the kitchen screaming, covered in tomato sauce to scare the wits out the already clingy young ladies.

Good times...

With those memories in mind, the first Elm Street (with Wes Craven's super-evil Freddy) ranks really highly in my list of favourite horrors, but lists of favourite movies are all over internet and don't always agree with me...

According to voting on the Internet Movie Database, the Top Ten Horror movies of all time are:

10. Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
9. The Night of the Hunter (1955)
8. Cabinet des Dr. Caligari., Das (1920)
7. Jaws (1975)
6. Faust - Eine deutsche Volkssage (1926)
5. Diaboliques, Les (1955)
4. Aliens (1986)
3. The Shining (1980)
2. Alien (1979)
1. Psycho (1960)

However, looking at that list you would have to think it was voted for by particularly poncy film students, because the bodycount and volume of blood in those movies is generally pitiful.

Now the Box Office Prophets site is a lot more on the ball!

10. The Exorcist
9. Psycho
8. Dead by Dawn: Evil Dead 2
7. Dawn of the Dead
6. Alien
5. Halloween
4. The Haunting (1963)
3. Nightmare on Elm Street
2. The Evil Dead
1. The Shining

Not my personal Top Ten, but a lot closer to the mark, I would say!

What Horror movies gave you the shivers and why?

When I was a kid these movies almost scared me to death:

1. The Exorcist - every night when I went to bed I thought my bed was going to start to shake

2. Texas Chain Saw Massacre - I don't know what my friends were thinking when we watched this at a slumber party.

3. Amityville Horror - I could never look at a toilet the same

Candyman. Absolutely terrifying, and no matter how tough you think you are, and as much as you know it's a movie, you just can't say the words in the mirror after watching it...

But, Evil Dead II, although not scary at all, must surely rank as one of the greatest blood/zombie movies of all time...

To be fair, I should probably give an indication of personal top picks, so here's a rough guide:

5. Return of the Living Dead - "Send more cops" is one of the funniest lines for a zombie ever.

4. Bloodbath at the House of Death - a very silly spoof movie, although I'm not sure if this should be on the best or worst list...

3. 28 Days Later - very, very disturbing stuff

2. Candyman

1. Evil Dead II - no competition...

Although, local movie Undead deserves a very honourable mention as one of my personal favourites as well!

Too many movies, too little time...

Did you see Saw?

I couldn't get over how clever it was. And freaky. The fact that the guy abducted people while they were asleep made it hard to get to sleep after I saw it.

And I also loved The Ring. I watched it so many times that it got to the stage that there was nothing to be freaked out about because I knew the whole movie off by heart...

The opening sequence of Scream. It had been so long since we had seen a horror movie of any merit and all of a sudden you get the bejesuz scared out of you in the first 15 minutes.
Do you like scary movies Casey?
Scary, scary stuff.
And that mask still sends shivers down my spine!

Wolf Creek and Hostel are up there, why, because those sort of things probably do happen

Wolf Creek is scary cos Jeff Jarratt is ex-playschool. Thats a scary thought. That and the fact he didnt bathe through the entire shoot.

For me, the Omen is well up on the list - the original one, not the crappy rehash. Loved Disturbia, even though its a thriller rather than true horror flick. Saw was brilliant, but the sequels have gone downhill. try the hills have eyes for over the top graphic horror.

if you want something truly twisted, try House of the 1000 Corpses, or its sequel, The Devil's Rejects. Absolutely crazy stuff, from the mind of Rob Zombie.

Glitter, starring Mariah Carey (2001)

It's the stomach-turning stuff of nightmares.

104 minutes of sheer terror.

Have your say
