'Big Bob' launches his push for Coast's big job

Noosa Mayor Bob Abbot has launched his campaign for the mayoralty of the new Sunshine Coast super-council with the slogan “Big Bob for the Big Job”.

He outlined his election pitch at the Noosa Marina in front of around 100 guests, including high-profile local identities such as radio personality Jamie Dunn, who introduced him to the crowd, former Olympian Raelene Boyle, ex-ironman Hayden Kenny and former rugby league star Willie Carne.

Mr Abbot said that although he was still anti-amalgamation, he had to accept that Queensland Premier Anna Bligh had ruled out any poll on the issue.

He told the crowd he had an “uncompromising track record” of standing up for his community, and that would not change.

The cornerstone of his “black and white” campaign is: “What you see is what you get.”

Black and white balloons, T-shirts and badges were on display at the launch. One of the T-shirts emblazoned with the “Big Bob for the Big Job” slogan was even donned by Maroochy councillor Christian Dickson after Mr Abbot had made his speech.

The Noosa Mayor said SSC was an acronym for “sustainability, service and common sense”.

He pledged to keep the focus on the small communities scattered across the Sunshine Coast, saying he would work to help them retain their character and individuality.

Mr Abbot said that if elected to lead the super-council, he would forge new structures to ensure the voices of these small communities weren’t drowned out by bigger competing interests.

Asked about his profile in other parts of the Coast, he replied: “I believe I am the most recognisable politician on the Sunshine Coast.”

Mr Abbot said he did not know exactly what his campaign budget would be, but suggested “a ballpark figure of $150,000”.

Iconic Events public relations company is helping drive his campaign, and later today Mr Abbot will open a campaign office in Tewantin.

The Friends of Noosa said Mr Abbot’s announcement meant he had “moved on” from his stance against the merger of the three Coast councils, and that anti-amalgamation residents were now on their own.

“We wish Bob every success in his mayoral campaign, but plainly he cannot continue to actively support our cause,” Friends of Noosa spokesman Jim Berardo said.

“The battle to save Noosa must now be fought by Noosa residents. We cannot expect support from elected representatives. We’re on our own.”

Mr Berardo said the Friends of Noosa would continue to rebuke the state government for its dismissal of the results of a recent plebiscite on the amalgamation issue.

“Premier Bligh and Minister Pitt have failed to acknowledge the significance of those results,” he said.

The Friends of Noosa are pursuing a range of avenues to continue their fight against amalgamation, including a formal complaint to the Crime and Misconduct Commission regarding the government’s handling of the process.

Mr Berardo said they were are also inviting federal Labor to re-visit its pre-election stance opposing forced amalgamations and supporting the plebiscite.

“Friends of Noosa have other initiatives in the pipeline ... at the very worst, assuming we fail to prevent the looming amalgamation, you can rest assured that we will be working to de-amalgamate Noosa from Maroochy and Caloundra.”

I believe that Bob Abbot is by far the most sensible person to be the Mayor for the new Regional Council. Although I live in Buderim I hope that quite a few councillors who represent Noosa will also apply for the new council. Noosa Council under Bob's guidance is the only one of our three councils that fights both government and developers to preserve our lifestyle and environment. Bob.

Well I got that prediction that Bob would not stand, WRONG!

Best of luck Bob, I hope all Sunshine Coast residents realise that you are passionate about Noosa.
I have no doubt that you will be able to think regionally and drop the elitism and parochialism that we saw during the amalgamation debate.

It didn’t do you any favours down this end of the coast, but I suppose you were fighting for you residents and what you believed in.

It will be interesting to see if people down this way forgive and forget. I for 1 don’t judge a book by its cover, and we know with you it’s what you see is what you get!

Poor old Joe won't be sleeping too well tonight.

Go Bob. We need someone who can run Maroochy; our current mayor has no idea.

There is no evidence that there is elitism and parochialism as part of the amalgamation debate.

15-20 years ago everyone ‘knew’ that the Sunshine Coast wasn’t just more of the Gold Coast. Now we all know that Maroochy and Caloundra shires are just that, but 15-20 years behind; there’s no fundamental difference and nothing in place to stop them going there. Only Noosa Shire is fundamentally different and really has things in place to keep it that way. A fear of losing that difference is a valid reason to want to separate Noosa from the sinking ship of the rest of the Sunshine Coast, although rescuing the whole of the Sunshine Coast would be a better outcome.

I’m sure that all Sunshine Coast residents would like to be able to see the Sunshine Coast as fundamentally different to the Gold Coast again. If that is ever to happen Bob must be the best bet.

As an aside; it’s interesting to compare the tone of the public comments on this news-item to the public comment on the current news-item headlined: ‘I'm not pro-development: Maroochy mayor’. Take a look.

Nah Bob!

You vehemently opposed this amalgamation, even led marches down George Street. You bared your Noosa soul, and declared your intent to fight to the death for all the Noosaites!!

Now, you commit treason!

You know that the great majority of Noosa residents do not want this, but, when the chips were on the table, you joined up the infidels!

"Bob there for his bob," should be your slogan.

Goodonya Bob
You’re no snob
We’d be proud for you
to lead our mob
You have a great big heart
that’s in the right place
& a happy mug that’s well known
to be our new regional face
You don’t get flustered, worried or phased
& your skill & know-how can guide us
through this confusing amal-ga-maze
Thank goodness there’s now
an intelligent voice
Lending itself to clear messages
common sense & real choice
With our new regional council about to start
You’re the Sunshine Coast guy
with our best interests at heart
Let’s keep our patch of paradise
both sustainable & real
Before we are completely covered
in concrete, bitumen & steel
So if ‘what you see is what you get’
Then Bob for Mayor is the best news yet
Next March it’s a no-brainer
Vote 1 for Big Bob
He’d be Australia’s coolest Mayor
in the hot seat of the top job.

Mr Bob_Bates. I am sorry but you don't get it. There is no treason in fighting for something you believe in. Bob is a pragmatist and knows that the State may well get its way on this one. The best way to protect Noosa and the rest of the Sunshine Coast is to step up and take on the issues head on where they will be fought.
I reckon he scores more points for that.

Have your say
