Disabled woman seeks help

Diane Wells hasn’t let mild cerebral palsy and osteogenesis imperfecta bone disease stop her from working three jobs, supporting her son and body surfing.

But since her car broke down, she is at risk of losing her part-time jobs as a relief teacher at a childcare centre in Pacific Paradise, a swimming teacher in Nambour and an appointment setter for Talk Communications.

The Mudjimba woman now has to rely on taxis and public transport to get to work.

“I’ve tried all the avenues I can think of and I haven’t been able to access a vehicle,” she said.

“Public transport is not so great and taxis are quite expensive.”

Diane was born with osteogenesis imperfecta bone disease, which causes bones to break easily, but has managed to take care of herself and raise her 18-year-old without help.

“I’ve been brought up to be independent,” she said.

Diane needs an automatic car with hands-only control installed so she can get back to work and make her way around town.

“I’m a very cheery person and if I can get out there and help anybody else that would be great,” she said.

Maroochy North Shore Lions Club vice-president Bevan Tompkins encouraged the community to donate cash or even a car to bring some Christmas joy to Diana.

“If she can’t get to work she can’t live,” he said. “She’s a gutsy, nice lady and she needs our support.”

To make donations phone Bevan on 5448 9099.

It would be great if a local company or companies could chip in to help fix her vehicle. The article doesnt say whats wrong with the vehicle, but maybe its cheaper to fix than get a different one?

Kudos to Diane for getting out there and working for an honest dollar whilst raising a child! I wish more people had her sense of pride about themselves. Good luck to her, and hopefully someone can help her out.
