Hutchinson to cruise schoolies on Coast

Independent candidate for the seat of Fisher Caroline Hutchinson will take to the streets on Saturday night as part of her commitment to combat violence.

As part of her role on the newly formed Streetsafe Taskforce, Ms Hutchinson has agreed to spend this Saturday night, the official launch of ‘schoolies’ week, traversing the Coast in a working taxi.

Ms Hutchinson said since bringing the Taskforce together, she has spoken to many young people and all of them are looking for clear guidelines from adults and law makers, to help make it safer on the streets at night.

Ms Hutchinson says part of her commitment, was the promise to get out and see for herself what’s actually going on.

“If politicians are going to be useful to young people, and truly committed to making the streets safer, then we need to see for ourselves what’s really happening. Bottom line, I guess, it’s a long time since I was at schoolies.”

Ms Hutchinson has welcomed a federal government pledge to provide CCTV camera equipment at Mooloolaba, Kawana and Caloundra, if re-elected.

“We’ve worked really hard at Streetsafe to bring attention to the problems on our streets, and we’re delighted to have finally attracted the government’s attention. But we’ve still got a long way to go.”

Ms Hutchinson said Streetsafe was planning to launch a community education program, is calling for security guards with dogs on the streets and will continue lobbying government for more police.

So much for the "no politicians" rule for this taskforce. Streetsafe has been going a few weeks and yet already it claims to have attracted government attention and done this and that.

The tragic events of last month got the attention and now this excellent community idea is going to be highjacked by politicians, elected or not.

If you are truly dedicated to this Mrs Hutchinson then how about your Daily mates stop reporting every move and you just go and do it without seeking the publicity.

I'm a believer now! I'm in that age group that thought independents were a bit radical but finally somebody has shown me the light.

Ms Hutchinson has shown a commonsense approach to a real problem and used her voice for the people to encourage the ruling party into action. Thankyou Ms Hutchinson and keep fighting the good fight.

I disagree with Mr Boast, I think it is good that someone is showing concern. Slippery is obviously in BIG trouble!

Well Mr Boast, if you don't have high profile people involved in groups such as this, then the media wouldn't be interested to report on progress and hence keep the movement in the spotlight. Agreed, the tragic events of not only last month, but also over the preceding months, pushed this problem to the forefront, but if not for the likes of Ms Hutchinson, would not have made it to the point it has.
Ms Hutchinson's involvement in this election campaign, IMHO, has made both major parties, which have ignored our requirements for umpteen years, sit up and take notice. The promise of a little money is now starting to trickle thru from the “big boys”, and you might note, it’s in the area Ms Hutchinson has been making the most noise about.
What more can we ask for and/or expect???

In responce to DS from Buderim & NasaPJN from Caloundra, my point is that the taskforce was not for politicians to use (their claim not mine) but for them to listen and act on what the community wanted. If you are an elected representative or one seeking election then you should not be the representative of that taskforce which claims independance from politics.

If I recall correctly the announcement of the formation of the taskforce just prior to the Caloundra meeting, it said no politicians were invited but welcome to attend, or something to that effect. We can all say it is politicians fault or they have done nothing or whatever we want to say. The simple fact is we as a community are responsible and it is we who get our elected representatives to act so maybe we should ask ourselves where were we for the last few years. I will put my hand up and say taking care of my kids and not worrying enough about others.

I can understand jboasts comments, however I have also seen Caroline in action, tirelessly working for the community for the past 10 years. She went into politics to make a difference and therefore attracts the publicity, not the other way around.

Find out a little bit about Caroline's background and community work, I think you will be very surprised about how much this lady has, can and will achieve.

You have my vote Caroline - without hesitation.

Have your say
