Three local teens have narrowly escaped dying in a car wreck, almost exactly a year to the day the Karawatha Drive smash snuffed out the lives of three others.
The boys – two aged 17 and one 18 – were involved in a serious crash on Eenie Creek Road, Noosa Heads, at 12.45am yesterday after attending a Schoolies function.
Police said the 2002 Mitsubishi Magna was headed west when it clipped a median strip, crossed on to the wrong side of the road, mounted an embankment and rolled.
The 18-year-old driver, from Marcus Beach, suffered multiple fractures and internal injuries.
He is in a serious condition at Nambour General Hospital.
The two other teens, from Noosaville and Marcus Beach, suffered minor head and neck injuries.
It is believed two of the boys were Year 12 students from a local high school.
Traffic crash investigator Senior Sergeant Dave Lonergan said yesterday’s smash was an extremely disappointing start to Schoolies week.
“This could very easily have been a repeat of the tragedy from last year,” he said.
“They could have killed themselves.
“They were going home at the time of the accident and I believe one of them is well enough to go back to Schoolies tonight.”
The driver, however, was not so lucky.
“The vehicle veered out of control across two east-bound lanes, flipping over on to its roof,” Snr Sgt Lonergan said.
“The driver was thrown from the vehicle.
“In the end I think they are going to be okay, but the driver was in a serious condition with a couple of fractures.
“He was drifting in and out of consciousness.
“We do know that the driver is not a Schoolie, he works, but the other two had just finished school.”
Officers from the Forensic Crash Unit are continuing their investigations into the accident, including whether alcohol was a factor.
