Sailing solo again

Sunshine Coast solo sailor Margaret Williams is contemplating another attempt at circumnavigating the country non-stop and unassisted.

The local doctor’s second attempt failed in July last year when the rigging on her sloop Against All Odds snapped, but she has enjoyed having a year off and still feels she can achieve her goal.

“I’m still thinking that I’d like to do it again,” she said.

“The boat’s in pretty good nick because I’ve had it all re-rigged and I’ve gone up in the rigging (to make it stronger), but there’s still a little bit of work to do before I try again.”

Margaret is contemplating her third attempt next April, when weather patterns will be more favourable.

But, she said, she was pleased to be on dry land for now and had to prepare mentally and physically for the bad weather she was likely to face on the voyage.

“It’s a bit daunting and that’s something I have to factor into whether I go again, but overall I think I’d like to give it another go,” she said.

“Because it’s so hard, you really have to feel passionate about doing it, and after the last attempt I was so exhausted, so I just wanted to enjoy life for a while.”
