Refuge promotes pets for life

Kym Sloman is a firm believer that all animals deserve a good home.

And yesterday the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge head supervisor had the chance to sing the praises of all animals great and small when she helped host an open day at the facility.

Visitors were given tours of the refuge and introduced to its animal residents.

“It’s about raising awareness of the re-homing of cats and dogs and to let people know we’re here,” Ms Sloman said.

“We’re promoting responsible pet ownership. Pets are for life.

“The trauma a cat or dog goes through when left is not good.”

Last year the refuge re-homed more than 1100 cats and dogs. Since Christmas alone, another 300 pets have been adopted.

Ms Sloman said there were a number of things to consider when bringing an animal into your life.

“You need to consider whether you can keep that pet for life,” she said.

“Think about what would best suit your lifestyle.”

The Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge is located at Sippy Creek Road, Tanawha.

Unfortunately the excess number of dogs especially is due to unscrupulous people using them for making profits, despite our pet overpopulation.

It is quite legal to keep dogs in cages as breeding machines to produce puppies for pet shops. These intensively produced puppies are used as commercial products, and buyers do not get to see the parents or get expert advice.

It is compulsory for pets from shelters to be microchipped and desexed, but not from pet shops!

Not allowing kittens and puppies to be available in pet shops will go a long way in dealing with the sad reality of the way life-long pets are just disposed of as unwanted throw-away items!
