A Wicked break

Being an Australian Idol graduate may not have worked out so well for everyone, but for Rob Mills it has opened the doors to something he has always dreamed of.

Rob, who was visiting the Coast yesterday, has been cast in one of the most highly anticipated musicals in Australia – Wicked.

“It’s a dream come true for a young man,” he said. “I first saw it in London a couple of years ago and I remember ringing my manager the next day and saying, ‘Just get me an audition, I’ll get the part’.

“I always loved entertaining. I think it was always in me – my parents took me to see Phantom when it first came out and I was just engrossed with it.

“For me it’s a big step forward … not just in my career but in personal achievements as well.”

Rob was enjoying the sun in Mooloolaba yesterday while promoting the show with fellow cast member Amanda Harrison, who scored the coveted role of Elphaba – the wicked witch of the west.

“It is a dream come true; it’s such an amazing role,” Amanda said.

“I think it’s exciting to be cast in a show that is all about the role that I play.

“I have been in lots of musicals before but mostly in supporting roles, so this is a big break for me.”

Wicked tells the story behind The Wizard of Oz and chronicles how the wicked witch of the west became wicked.

It has taken both Broadway and London’s West End by storm, and has already garnered enormous interest and support here before its Australian premiere in Melbourne on July 12.
