According to Josh Constable, yesterday’s open men’s final of the Oxbow Australian Longboard Titles at Port Macquarie was “just one of those dream heats”.

The Noosa champion secured his fourth national title with a dominant display that ensured the final was as good as his less than 10 minutes into the action.

After four minutes the 27-year-old posted an 8.5-point wave, and less than five minutes later he effectively ended the final as a contest with a near-perfect 9.75 ride.

An 8.75 later in the heat ensured Constable finished on a two-wave total of 18.50, ahead of Coffs Harbour runner-up Harley Ingleby (14.50).

The result was a reversal of the outcome last year, when Constable relinquished his Australian crown after finishing second to Ingleby.

“It’s been pretty tough all week. We’ve been battling big but inconsistent surf, but today when we got to the beach we knew it was going to kick in all day,” Constable said.

“We were surfing a good kilometre off the beach; it was tough conditions with pretty strong offshore winds – you just had to pick the right wave.”

Constable admitted he had no clue of his early dominance until later in the heat.

“Because we were so far out we couldn’t hear the scores,” he said.

“It wasn’t until I got that 8.75 on my third wave that I knew I was in the lead, because I knew I had a 9.75.

“It was a really good wave and when I was paddling back out I was thinking it could be a 10, and when I heard them call 9.75 I was thinking I was so close.

“IT was definitely one of those finals from the get-go.

“When I won my second Aussie title at Bell’s Beach I had a perfect 10-point ride, which was pretty special.”

Constable and Ingleby have enjoyed a friendly rivalry in recent years, and Constable said it was nice to be on the right side of the ledger this time around.

“Harley won it last year and he’s leading the world tour at the moment,” Constable said.

“We’ve had some great finals over the last few years and to get this one was a good feeling.”

Constable wasn’t the only Coast surfer to enjoy success, with Maroochydore’s Georgie Roach taking out the under-18 girls’ final.

Noosa duo Kelly Winter and Rosie Locke finished second and third respectively behind Gold Coaster Chelsea Williams in the open women’s final.
