The cars might be much smaller than the real thing, but for four boys from Noosa District State High, developing a model Formula One car is no small matter.
The Bullets racing team, Scott Bellingham, team manager and marketing; Dean Tsilfidis, design engineer and graphics designer; Lucas Rykenberg, manufacturing engineer; and James Presling, design and manufacturing engineer, tore up the track in the regional F1inSchools competition at the Cooroy campus.
Thirteen junior and senior teams contested the regional competition, with a pro junior and pro senior team selected to contest the next round of competition.
Just like a real Formula One team, competitors in the F1inSchools Challenge design and manufacture CO2 powered model Formula One cars.
The teams are judged by professional industry and engineers across 11 categories including car design, understanding of engineering dynamics, technical portfolio, verbal presentation, use of collaboration technology, liaising with industry, and car speed.
The Bullets were awarded an honoured prize for Australia’s Fastest F1 Car in the 2007 National competition, reaching speeds near 100km/hr, or a sahde over one second for the 20-metre track.
After the regional titles the Bullets will be hoping to go one better at the national championships after seconds in 2006 and 2007.
To get there the Bullets will be able to make use of engineering software used by companies such as Boeing, a virtual wind tunnel computerised lathe and a 20-metre race track courtesy of the ReEngineering Australia Forum.
National winners will represent Australia at the International F1inSchools.
