One of the Australian PGA Championship's best drawcards Adam Scott has retired from the $1.5 million competition following a surfing accident.

Ranked number 17 in the world, the Queenslander dislocated his kneecap while surfing at Coolum on the weekend.

He contacted tournament officials today to withdraw from the tournament being held this week at the Hyatt Regency in Coolum.

He is undergoing tests and an MRI scan on the injured knee to determine his tournament fitness and is also in doubt for next week's Australian Open. The scan results are expected today.

"Adam was going for a swim on Sunday morning and was making his way out in the shallows. He stood in a sand depression and twisted his right knee a little bit," said manager Justin Cohen.

"There’s just a minor little issue with his knee and this is fully precautionary, but we do expect him to be back in action and ready to go for the Australian Open next week."
