The victim of a beer bottle attack which almost pierced the jugular vein has been awarded $22,500 in compensation in a Maroochydore court.
Anil Ahmad Alyas received a 5cm long cut to the throat and 6cm ragged edge wound to the neck during the nightclub attack in 2005 at the hands of Tuan Ngoc Luong.
During a contested sentence in 2006, Mr Luong was sentenced to a term of imprisonment after the judge found his actions were “deliberate, not reckless”.
Judge John Robertson, when he awarded the compensation in Maroochydore District Court, said the attack was “a form of payback” after Mr Alyas insulted females in Mr Luong’s company.
He said the wound exposed the jugular vein and the carotid artery, but did not protrude them.
Mr Alyas has suffered significant disfigurement and scarring which is unlikely to be enhanced in the future.
He has lost of feeling to his neck which cannot be corrected by surgery.
Mr Luong told the court he did not have that sort of money but hoped he could help out with any immediate medical expenses.
Authorities will assess Mr Luong’s financial situation.
