Abbot is favourite for top job

Noosa Mayor Bob Abbot has emerged as a strong favourite for the Sunshine Coast mayoralty, according to the results of the biggest ever Coast survey of residents.
More than half of the people who filled out a Your Coast Your Say survey in January indicated they would vote for Mr Abbot on polling day on March 15, preliminary results show.
Mr Abbot said he wasn’t surprised by the result but it did not necessarily mean he would emerge the victor.
“It’s what I was hoping for,” he said.
“We’ve worked pretty hard to try and get the policies out there and given these surveys were filled in very early in the campaign, it’s a very good base to work from.
“Although it feels good to be in this position, you’ve got to remember that there are a large amount of people who want different leadership who still need to make up their mind which way to go.”
The four-page survey, run by the Daily, thedaily.com.au and Seven Local News, attracted 1582 responses last month.
Initial analysis by the University of the Sunshine Coast shows 56% of those who responded would prefer Mr Abbot as the new mayor and 15% want Maroochy Mayor Joe Natoli in the top job after the amalgamation elections.
Of the remainder, 27% wanted new leadership and 2% wanted a specific person not nominated for the position. Unfortunately for those 27%, Mr Abbot and Mr Natoli are now the only two contenders after nominations closed on February 19.
Mr Natoli said he was not discouraged by the results.
He said they did not accurately reflect the feedback he had been getting from the public.
“I am only interested in the poll on March 15 – they are the only statistics that matter,” he said.
“I’m very proud of my record and very confident that I am the person who can come up with new ideas and who has the capability to manage and be a mayor for the entire region.
“I’ll make sure I represent the entire Sunshine Coast and not just on one particular issue.
“The $400,000 that Noosa Council spent on promoting anti-amalgamation is something that has certainly given Bob Abbot national recognition, but I feel the Noosa community are torn by having been taken to a point of no return, then almost abandoned by Bob.
“Even in Noosa I’m getting very strong feelings about fresh ideas and new leadership.
“What I’m hearing very clearly is (people) want to be guaranteed their communities are not going to change; this is something I’ve fought very strongly for in Maroochy Shire.”
Of the survey respondents, 59% were from Maroochy shire, about 28% lived in Caloundra and only 13% in Noosa shire.
Survey respondent Alan Macdonald, of Little Mountain, echoed the sentiments of those who wanted an “unbiased” mayor.
His preference was for a candidate from outside the region.
“Bob Abbot is too interested in his own area and retaining the Noosa image (and) I don’t think Joe Natoli would be the right leader either.”
Maroochydore woman Ebony O’Rourke disagrees with Mr O’Neill’s sentiments. She will cast her vote for Mr Natoli because she is impressed with his track record in Maroochy Shire.
“I’ve met Joe and his wife a few times and they are decent people. He will handle the responsibility of the job,” Ebony, 24, said.

Unfortunately it seems I am very naive in regard to this as all I ever read about with my local Maroochy council members are incidents friction, fights and one particular councillor who writes every excuse known to man on this feed back site.
Blind Freddy would have seen this was always going to be a total waste of money and as Mr. Natoli implies, we can now see the real reason for Mr. Abbot's council indulgence with Noosa ratepayer's money.
Personally, I preferred a candidate who has no allegiance, duty or baggage to a previous council to be mayor.
However, that is not the case for the SCRC and one wishes the new council all the very best.
It is also interesting to note that 59% of the poll giving only 15% support to Joe Natoli were from Maroochy Shire. I wonder if there is a message in there somewhere?
Joe Natoli's inability to control his council, the infighting between councillors, particularly Tom Hulet,
and Joe's desires to allow Junipers'company to build 122 units on the Brisbane Road carpark four years ago, against community wishes make me firmly believe that of the two men, Big Bob for the Big Job.
One only has to look at Noosa Shire's huge, green open spaces, their determination to allow only three storeys and compare them to the high density of Maroochy and Caloundra. And there's more------.
I've lived on the Coast all my life and the one thing you can count on is change, my point is do you want someone leading the council who is a great bloke but won't accept the Coast is going to grow or a guy who realises that change is upon us and is willing to look at whats good for all of us not just his favorite piece of the Coast.
Oh and Bob if you do get in can I book my kids in now to live on the Coast or do I have to wait until there 18?
Forget about the personality contest and look at the policies they have in front of you. Remember what happened last time the Coast voted on personality....no offence Alison!
However, after hearing him speak at a public meeting recently, I believe that he has accepted that the Amalgamation is going ahead and he has given his committment that if he is elected as the new Mayor he will represent with open and honest government the concerns of the people within the WHOLE of the Sunshine Coast Region.
It will be a nice change to have open and accountable government by Council and someone who understands that he represents the Ratepayers whose concerns about matters which affect their livelihood and way of life will be considered in the WHOLE picture. Best wishes Bob
Residents and ratepayers are fed up with thaving their wishes ignored and the unbridled developement which is impacting unfavourably on their lifestyle. Bob abbott appears to be the only one who is listening. Both Caloundra and Maroochydore seem hell bent on competing with the Gold Coast, and every new highrise brings that closer.
Traffic and other infrastructure simply cannot cope with the current rate of developement, and what was once a nice place to live and work has become just like any other city.
Remember when you could get around the place with relative ease?
Remember when you could go fishing and catch a keeper most times?
Remember when you could get a park at the plaza without driving around hunting and stressing for fifteen minutes?
Remember when our beaches weren't marred by litter and jetski's?
Remember when Discovery beach was Surfair and sans gleaming white monoliths?
Remember when Buderium was green?
The list is long and undestinguished.
Yes you should be scared.
What scares the boardies off me, is that there are still people out there who accept acelerated and sweeping change as an acceptable thing.
Unfettered growth is not the answer.
As far as I'm concerned your kids can line up just like anyone else wanting to overcrowd our lifestyle to the point of selfprepetuating destruction.
The residents have a vote and a real say in this, surely you can see that there is one viable "sustainability" candidate and one newly greenwashed business as usual candidate. Guess who is which.
I'll give you a hint.... "55.9%" should be meaningful.
As to the personality debate , there is no debate , the proof is in the pudding , come Election day one will be further expanding the waistline whilst the other will be supping on humble pie.
including pertinent blogs outing those that have questionable alliances with gift giving Developers and their "Voluntary Infrastructure Agreements".
That would help the reader base to make an informed decision come election day.

I went there to check what you had to say on housing, but there was nothing, other than a message that you might release your policy on that some time or other.
Elsewhere, you said you wished that housing would be more affordable. Don't we all!
But, what can you do as a Councillor to achieve that?
How far south has Bob travelled recently??
It's similar to the Brisbane line during the war, only now its called "The Ugly Line".
That line is now drawn along the southern Bank of the Maroochy River. South of "The Ugly Line" is getting more like Brisneyland with each passing year.
South of this line would be forfeited in the case of a foreign invasion.
Besides that there are many people like Bob suffering from "Optiohighdensityitis" , an affliction which hurts the eyes and brings on nausea.
An amendement to the Bylaws requiring everything to be painted green apparently will alleviate the symptoms until relocation can be arranged.
Apparently alcohol numbs the pain short term as well. ;-P
So far, I'm thinking his silence on the matter is starting to speak volumes.
Bob Abbot and Joe Natoli were in Caloundra this week (Tues) addressing Cal and Kawana chambers of commerce. There is a story on this site - http://www.thedaily.com.au/news/2008/feb... - with some audience feedback. Do your homework, mate.
try http://bigbob.com.au/policy
Also on his web site there is a list of public engagements where there is an opportunity to hear both candidates speak and to ask questions
To boot, it was obvious that he hadn't even had the decency to read it let beforehand let alone memorise it for this ever so important annual Australian event.
There is no way I would vote for a man who didn't have the decency to do a little ground work himself prior to the service to acknowledge our Heroes, The Anzacs.
It was a disgrace, to him, his council and our Diggers. I look forward very much to the much credited Bob Abbot taking over such an important leadership role with the welfare of the people of the Sunshine Coast and its precious terrain in mind.
He is obviously a very decent man and is not looking for the high profile, high maintenance prestige to which Natoli seems to so assuage. Go Big Bob, Go!
