Caloundra’s ageing events centre could get a $20 million redevelopment, making it the premier entertainment venue on the Sunshine Coast for the next decade.
That is the intention of regional council mayoral aspirant Joe Natoli if he wins on March 15.
And he is not hanging around, having already spoken to events centre chairwoman Joan Sheldon about fast-tracking plans to upgrade the centre, and arranging to talk to theatre and performing arts groups on Monday.
“Planning is well under way for the redevelopment, and funding from state and federal governments needs to be secured urgently,” Mr Natoli said.
The centre would eventually be complemented by a proposed performing arts centre to be built on Horton Park, but that land is not available for seven years.
Mr Natoli said the Caloundra plans were impressive.
“I am particularly impressed with the sustainable design features like recycling of grey water, solar panels and maximising natural light,” he said.

If Joe was somehow able to get the Rudd Government to renege on the $5m election pledge towards the central Sunshine Coast facility and divert the money a half hour closer to existing venues in Brisbane, it would spell the end of the Maroochydore project.
