Coast starting to flood

Coast starting to flood

Jan Wise submitted this photo of the flooded Six Mile Bridge in the Noosa hinterland. The picture was taken at 3.45pm this afternoon. She said the water was definitely rising!

See tomorrow's Daily and thedaily.com.au for extensive coverage

Flood waters were flowing over the road along Louis Bazzo Drive near Pomona as overnight rains helped swell Six Mile Creek.

The creek had risen above the bridge by 2.30pm and Noosa Council was warning motorists not to try driving through any submerged roads unless they were sure the water depth or flow did not pose a danger.

A traffic control officer was on site today and was considering closing the crossing if waters rose much further.

The rain on the Sunshine Coast is showing no sign of easing with Landsborough receiving a massive 45mm in only two hours this morning.

Latest figures from the weather bureau, for the 24 hour period ending 9am shows the Sunshine Coast received on average between 15 to 25mm of rain.

Largest rainfalls were received in Cooroy with 68mm, Maleny receiving 62mm, Boreen Point 63mm and Mt Tinbeerwah receiving 61mm.

Further south, Maroochydore recorded 34mm, Mountain Creek 39mm, Tanawha 44mm, Yandina 41mm and Nambour 37mm.

Beerwah recorded 22mm, Peachester 35mm and Morayfield 23mm.

If this has put a dampener on your day, take heart as the rains should start to ease by Saturday.

Brisbane-based weather forecaster, Vikash Prasad told thedaily.com.au the showers and south-easterlies would continue with the rain likely to intensify tomorrow before easing on the weekend.

Temperatures on the weekend are expected to reach the high 20s or early 30s with high humidity.

"It looks like most of the rain will be gone (by Saturday),'' Mr Prasad said.

The residents of the Sunshine Coast are for some more bad weather. It is good to see the rainfall but this developing low 900k out from Fraser Island is only going to create more unrest especially for those that could see flooding.

The Brisbane office of the Weather Bureau has had a rough time over a couple of weeks now and judging by various images on www.weatherzone.com.au, rainy weather to continue.

Not being a resident of the Sunshine Coast or surrounding area, I do clearly, remember what happened in 1974 and I'm appalled at the lack of attention that is being given to our weather - especially those who have ignored the warnings from lifesavers on the Sunshine/Gold Coasts beaches.

There are some very good images that have been forwarded to this paper and down here in Brisbane to the Courier Mail. However, it is also annoying that boaties are also ignoring the conditions and are venturing out and the Redcliffe Coast Guard has joined with the Brisbane Water Police to send a loud message to boat owners.

It would be interesting to see if the Coast Guard foltillas on the Sunshine Coast from Caloundra to Tin Can Bay have seen activity over the period that we've this dangerous sea conditions. From checking out the above mentioned website, the Sunshine Coast area as south as Beerburrum has seen some high rainfall amounts and this is clearly set to continue.
