Leigh Warneminde (Coast Care) , Vivien Griffin, Harry Clark and Edwin Hammet (Coast Care volunteer) inspect the proposed Yaroomba coastal cycle route.
The planned route for the Yaroomba coastal bike path is deeply flawed from both cycling safety and environmental perspectives, says super-council candidate Vivien Griffin.
Ms Griffin, who instigated and chaired the Noosa Bicycle Advisory Group for many years, has joined residents and environmentalists in attacking Maroochy Council’s decision to approve construction of the 3km bicycle pathway at the Yaroomba beachfront.
"This is yet one more example of non-consultation with the community by this council," said Coolum and hinterland Division 9 candidate for the new regional council.
"I have personally inspected the proposed route, and it is wrong from both cycling safety and environmental perspectives.
"I can only assume it has been designed by someone with little practical experience of recreational cycling."
Ms Griffin said the steep slopes of the proposed route were a clear cycling hazard, with a build-up of moss from leaf litter making the path very slippery.
“I am aware of a section of the Noosa coastal bike path done many years ago which has to be re-routed because of this very problem,” she said.
“On top of this, the need for clearing for fire management is being considered only now … apparently this was not required on Lend Lease land as a condition of approval.
“The worst of all possible worlds would be two separate swathes of clearing, all on our precious community asset of coastal dunes."
The Coolum District Coast Care group expressed its concern about the pathway as early as May last year.
"Our concern is heightened by the fact that this track will cross the parabolic dune, an act which we regrettably must regard as one which can only be described as council-endorsed vandalism," it said in a letter to Maroochy Mayor Joe Natoli.
The group has since been trying to muster support to have the approval of the pathway overturned.
However, Ms Griffin said these views appeared to have received scant consideration.
"A coastal pathway is a great project, and there will be a good solution available with the combined goodwill and intellects of the local community, Lend Lease and Maroochy Council.
“Recently, Coast Care representatives were invited to walk the proposed route and provide comment, but that is simply being asked to choose the least worst of a bad option. I am confident with goodwill we can do much much better."
Ms Griffin said that if elected to the new regional council, she would push for a re-think of the current proposal.
"However, I call on Mayor Natoli and Cr Bruce Dunne right now to get all parties around the table. Until that is done, Mayor Natoli must place a moratorium on any further action on the current proposal."

The protection of the parabolic dunes was to be a cornerstone of the Hyatt application. What happened?
How disappointing - people claiming to be protecting fragile dunes by tramping all over them while they argue why others should not have the same priviledge. There is a logic mismatch here.
Surely environmentalists want NOBODY on these fragile dunes! OR do we just want ourselves and our friends to use them.
Explain please!!!

This should have been the political process in the first place. In light of your comments yesterday to the effect that MSC builds bike paths where people want them, how is this political point scoring?
You write: “The protection of the parabolic dunes was to be a cornerstone of the Hyatt application. What happened?”
You’re the one with direct access to MSC employees, town planners and bullying developers. You tell us!
The only “logic mismatch” is yours. Other than Coast Care and one or two concerned residents it is council employees who are tramping (trampling?) the dunes setting out the route for the dozers. Believe me, they will need dozers.
Yes, Tom. No one should be running all over these dunes. MSC once thought the same thing that is why they put up a fence 20 odd years ago. A minimalist east-west beach access already exists and is all that is needed.
Now that you have had a chance to meet, does the MSC chief environmental officer still claim that the proposed path follows an existing path; that there is a completed environmental report, and; that EPA has given its approval?
I will have more details asap. Sorry, we did little more than talk generalities as yet BUT I am NOT putting you off.
I agree to attempt to protect the dunes and to ensure the facts are openly available.
What is a 'minimalist access'? Does anybody take a bike there? If some can use it surely all are permitted?
Would a 'minimalist boardwalk' as in the Maroochy Wetlands in Bli Bli be suitable? It works a treat there and many notable environmentalists who have donated to build that because they believe it would protect the fragile ecosystem there - with Maroochy Council of course.
More soon.
The Tanah St to Marcoola esp path is a great example of a footpath, but to call it a cycle path or to indicate it as a bikeway is like calling Mooloolaba esp a motorway.
Maroochy council please take note: A bikeway needs no pedestrians, no animals, safe enough for a cyclist to travel up to 50kph and be able pass slower cyclist, and be part of a cycle network. Until you can deliver, tell the truth and call it what it is – a footpath!
As single father stated road cyclists don't want a so called cycle path, overgrown with weeds, covered with sand and debris and frequented by bush turkeys of the feathered variety, we have to contend with enough of those 'turkeys' that get behind the wheel of a car.
At the first Meeting of the year and the first meeting since you and I blogged our way to some understanding, the Council today resolved to further investigate the bikeway.
I added, that ANY and ALL documentation held by Council or available to Council be made available to the public.
Despite silly claims by a Candidate seeking to claim that she is so powerful and that we are soooo frightened of her strategy that we passed the resolution because of her!
You and I know that we started this work before she even nominated!
Anyway - the info you asked me for is now available. OK?
Again, congrats to the blog site, Mark. This is your first definitive victory!!!
- May it be the first of many Tom - not so much for the blog site - but for the capacity of councils and councillors to listen to what ordinary people are saying - and respond when logical and constructive suggestions are made. And as has been noted by several other bloggers on the cycle paths epic blog - congratulations for at least having the courage to enter this arena. May there be more elected reps joining democracy in cyberspace - Editor
