Man gives birth

Man gives birth

Thomas Beatie, who is legally male but decided to keep his female sex organs during chest reconstruction surgery and testosterone therapy, has given birth to a baby girl.

A US man who was born a woman before undergoing gender reassignment surgery has given birth to a baby girl, US media reported today.

Thomas Beatie, who is legally male but decided to keep his female sex organs during chest reconstruction surgery and testosterone therapy, attracted worldwide attention in April after revealing his pregnancy.

The 34-year-old gave birth to a baby girl at a hospital in Bend, Oregon, America’s ABC News reported, without providing further details.

Beatie, who sports a beard, was dubbed the ’pregnant man’ after appearing on Oprah Winfrey’s television talkshow to discuss his pregnancy.

“I feel it’s not a male or female desire to have a child. It’s a human need. I’m a person and I have the right to have a biological child,” Beatie told the chat show queen.

Beatie’s unusual situation first became public when he wrote an article in the US gay magazine The Advocate in March entitled Labor of Love.

“To our neighbors, my wife, Nancy, and I don’t appear in the least unusual,” he wrote, explaining that his wife was unable to have a child after undergoing a hysterectomy. So he chose to become pregnant by artificial insemination, he said.

“Our situation sparks legal, political, and social unknowns,” Beatie wrote, adding the couple had experienced opposition from health care professionals, friends and family.

One doctor refused to treat the couple, after consulting an ethics board.

“How does it feel to be a pregnant man? Incredible. Despite the fact that my belly is growing with a new life inside me, I am stable and confident being the man that I am,” Beatie wrote.

Shouldn't the headline read "woman who lives as a man gives birth"? Oh wait, then there would be no headline would there? I am happy that everything is okay with the baby, but this person is not biologically a man.If she was then there would be no female reproductive organs and therefore no baby to give birth to.

Good on you, Thomas. Sure it's a little weird and all, but can this really be the first person in the history of man/humankind to have done such a thing? What's the big deal?

Quite frankly, as long as the child is loved, protected, encouraged and taught right from wrong - I don't care if its parents are male, female, gay, straight, trans-sexual, bi, unsure, curious, still searching or yellow with purple spots!!

I don't have a problem with peoples sexual preferences - live and let live. What I have an issue with is the type of headlines this family is getting eg "Man gives Birth" The fact of the matter is that no matter how hard Thomas tries to be a man, biology says he is a woman and that biological factor is the only reason Thomas was able to give birth. As I see it you can not have it both ways. If you want to live as a man, then you have the right to do so, BUT if you want to have a baby,by actually giving birth to it,then you have to face the fact you are a woman.
Anyway I hope this unusual family will be very happy and I especially hope this baby grows up with going through too much teasing and torment. No matter how much we may like to think they can be a "normal" family it is just not possible.A family unit, yes, but normal,no.

A man traped in a womans body or a woman traped in a mans body....... Nothing rare about that !

if you have female gentialia, you are female, regardless of what a piece of paper may suggest. If you have female genitala, it is not really hard to comprehend her ( i use the term advisedly) giving birth to a child. A rose by any other name is a rose.
A person with woman's plumbing, is a woman

How about a child trapped in a trans-gender family born with massive amounts of unnaturally occurring hormones coursing though its veins from birth . Growing up physcologically confused (loved or not) This one would send Sigmund Freud back to his Archtypes!!

The comments here make me proud to be a Sunshine Coaster. I was ashamed reading other News websites comments on this story. I watched Thomas and his lovely wife and her two beautiful adult daughters on Oprah. What a delightful couple and so devoted and in love. The media created the headline, not Thomas. Oprah fed the media frenzy but in the end, I believe this new baby will have a wonderful loving nurturing family to grow up in. Some ‘good news’ in a time where all we seem to read and hear about is the torture, abuse, starvation and killing of children in Australia in 2008.

Did this "man" receive any money from his/hers Oprah Winfrey’s appearance? These sick people deserve nothing. They are no more than deviations from the natural evolutionary population of this earth. If they were genuine in what they want out of life - they would not make a world wide story out of what they do.

i just find this story very interesting. though i do agree in a lot of ways that she is a female who had a sex change into a man. this is a decision made and it is a personal business whether that a birth of a baby present. it was unlikely that a man could carry a baby because of his body, unless he is born with woman parts and be able to have babies, that i would say that is pretty unusual. Unless it has been in the dark for so long. I don't really care what people do as long they are happy with what they do and the life they lived for.

congratulations, best regards.
