Doonan’s Stuart Little loves to fish, loves his job and loves his life.
But he had a problem that continually put him in a twist.
Being a tinkerer, he set about coming up with a solution which has won him a place in the final of the ABC New Inventors series.
Stuart’s problem was one that had confounded users of side-cast reels since they were first invented. For every metre the line was cast, it would twist two-and-a-half times. Every time the line was cast, the problem compounded until eventually it would end up in a bird’s nest mess that destroyed the line and terminated the day’s fishing. If the fisherman was irresponsible, the end result would be wildlife-harming line discarded in the environment.
Stuart’s solution started to take real shape about seven years ago when he saw a neighbour walking up and down the street, trailing fishing line to undo the twists.
Stuart, who through Noosa Home Assist Secure is one of a three-person team that helps the elderly with household maintenance problems, thought there had to be a better way.
That way was to cast a sinker with fins which, in concert with the swivel, effectively drives out the twists every time the line is retrieved.
