Nick D’Arcy’s swimming future may be in limbo after he was dumped from the Olympics team but it looks like his radio career is just about to take off.
Prime Radio Network has announced that the Sunshine Coast butterfly champion will join the breakfast crew on local station Hot 91 from Monday.
Prime general manger Rick Chapman told thedaily.com.au that D’Arcy would be on air weekday mornings from 6am in the lead-up to and during the Beijing Games.
He will join the Hot 91 breakfast team of Ronnie, Todd and Sami, as well as providing commentary for other stations in the Prime network.
“While TV tends to dominate during the Olympics, we thought we’d have some point of difference,” Mr Chapman said.
“He (Nick) has certainly done the hard yards (training) and he knows what it takes to get there, but unfortunately he won’t be competing.”
D’Arcy was hailed as a hero after he smashed the Commonwealth 200m butterfly record during the Olympic trials in March, but was dropped from the Beijing swim team after becoming involved in an altercation with former swimmer Simon Cowley at a Sydney bar soon afterwards.
The swimmer appealed against the Australian Olympic Committee’s decision, but was unsuccessful.
He is due to face court again tomorrow on assault charges arising from the fracas with Cowley.
While D’Arcy’s coach, Brian Stehr, is hoping that watching the competition in Beijing will spur the young swimmer into continuing with his sport, Prime said he was looking forward to “moving on and being part of all the excitement in Beijing” through his radio gig.
“Nick will bring a fantastic insight, wealth of inside knowledge, and great outlook on what it takes to be an elite athlete,” it said in a media release.
Mr Chapman said the radio network hoped D’Arcy would remain on air after the Olympics ended, but that would depend on the swimmer’s own plans.

Don't you have any ambition?
Anyway, look at many other so called celebrities around and tell me it was not some public grabbing event that put them in the limelight and hence into the media. Cory, anyone from Big Brother, the Corby's, Paris Hilton and so on. So is the message we send do something wrong and get in the media or do something outrageous and get there faster???
Hey, I think he would have a fantastic insight into what the Olympic competitors go through and if he is good then he will stay on air, if not he goes.
Good luck Nick but would really like to see you win in London.
**For Corey to host an out of control party causing damage to the neighbouring properties, is shameful for him and most importantly his guests..
**For footballers and the like to be convicted selling and taking drugs is upsetting, but grateful they are only destroying their lives..
You hear and know about the drunkin stories from the Mooloolaba night clubs, terrible bashings and people receiving serious injuries from “bashings”.
Example: Why would HOT 91 or any business employ one of those people?
((a possible intro for Nick))
“yes you saw him on tv and in the papers as the kid that allegedly assaulted and left a man with horrific facial injuries……. It’s our time to say “good on you”, Australia loves and supports your lifestyle and we want you to be apart of our lives by being in the faces (or ears) of the community, because you are a role model for society”
NO NO NO.. not a good look is it…….
Jboast, read through the list of injuries Cowley allegedly suffered and then try to explain how his downgrade in charges to "defensive" can be justified. I'll tell you how it was justified, because he's a sports celebrity in the media. You say he was tried by the media, i say he was saved by the media!
Also if we apply the standard any indiscretion means no public profile then many current "personalities" will be off air.
Other sports stars can admit to using illegal drugs and still appear on national television...i return to my earlier point we should treat this young man as innocent until a court of law...not the media proves him guilty.
I agree with superdrooper on this one .
