Bring on our cultural revolution

Bring on our cultural revolution

Joan Sheldon, Bob Abbot and Joe Natoli at the announcement of the multi-million dollar redevelopment of the Caloundra Events Centre.

Both mayoral candidates in the regional council election have pledged to fast track the $20 million Caloundra Events Centre upgrade.

Maroochy mayor Joe Natoli and Noosa mayor Bob Abbot were committed to providing the $2.7 million needed from the new Sunshine Coast Regional Council to begin the project, they said at the Events Centre yesterday.

Events Centre chair Joan Sheldon said the redevelopment would increase the seating capacity from 900 to 1400, and provide a new outdoor performance area and big-screen television, a coffee shop, a gallery and exhibition space, a new auditorium and foyer area and more areas for dressing rooms and rehearsal spaces.

Caloundra council has already provided $1.3 million towards the redevelopment and the rest will come from the regional council, state and federal governments, community fundraising and private investment.

Mr Abbot said the redevelopment was the start of a “cultural revolution” on the Sunshine Coast.

He said the construction of The J at Noosa was the beginning of a move towards improved arts and cultural facilities on the Coast, with the future development of Horton Park Golf Course, in Maroochydore, to also include a performing arts complex.

Mr Natoli said the Horton Park development was still at least seven years away and the region needed an arts complex in the short-term.

Firm Architectus has been commissioned for the redevelopment.

There is the possability of a real cultural revolution, with the will of "the people" being listened to by the gov.

This letter introduces a plan to retain Noosa. Please read carefully, for it allows each and of us to take effective action and responsibility for our local council, shire and future, in the true spirit of democracy.

We the people have spoken in numerous petitions, public demonstrations, the Federal Government plebiscite and finally a community-run referendum with 95% of voters wanting to retain Noosa Shire.

With the completion of the referendum legal entitlement has now been created. This legal entitlement now provides us, the Noosa community, with the ability to maintain OUR OWN STAND ALONE NOOSA COUNCIL by boycotting the unwanted regional council election.

The State Government does not have the Legal authority to abolish Noosa Shire when an absolute majority of Noosa residents are opposed to such action.

Voting in the unwanted regional council election means co-operating and giving legal consent and authority to the government to abolish Noosa Shire and include it in the regional council. The State Government requires a majority of Noosa people to vote (to give consent) to gain the authority to abolish Noosa Shire and form the proposed regional council.

VOTING=CONSENTING, NOT VOTING=NOT CONSENTING: a simple principle with huge legal impact.
There are a number of legally accepted constitutional reasons for not voting.

A legal form (Notice of Voter's Veto) will soon be available to allow Noosa residents a constitutional exemption from participating in the unwanted regional council election and thereby voting instead for Noosa local council and democracy. Completing the Notice of Voters Veto and not participating in the unwanted regional council election is withholding your legal consent from anything other than maintaining our own local council.

If a majority of us choose not to vote (withhold legal consent) the government cannot legally abolish our shire. Note: the Government has acted within the Law to this point. A majority boycott (an Australian precedent in itself) would cause the Law to be on the side of Noosa residents.

Please consider this matter carefully. If you wish to maintain a Noosa local council and do not consent to Noosa Council being abolished or included in the unwanted regional council then:
1) Get a copy of the Notice of Voters Veto. (Distributed soon)

2) Read and sign the Notice

3) Post the Notice to PO Box 2487 Noosa Heads QLD 4567

4) Help make others aware of this choice.

5) Do not vote in the unwanted regional council electiction
