Abbot targeted in fake flyer scam

A fake two-page flyer purported to be from mayoral candidate Bob Abbot has been discovered in letterboxes in the Coolum area.

A resident contacted the Daily at lunchtime yesterday after checking his mailbox and finding the offending literature.

Typed on two pages of plain folded A4 paper, the flyer lists questions and answers supposedly from Mr Abbot, with both pages carrying his official campaign logo “Big Bob for the Big Job”, with the photo-cartoon of Mr Abbot.

The first page begins with some “soft” questions and reasonable answers, but as the reader progresses, both questions and answers become more libellous. and defamatory.

Below a second use of the logo at the bottom of the second page, a line in small print reads “Authorised by the NLA”.

The flyer bears similarities in style and intent to one which was circulated to the electorate of Lindsay in Sydney during the dying days of the federal election last November.

In one section headed “What were your greatest achievements for Noosa in your time as mayor?” it read “I am proud to say that I presided over a council that was content to whittle away at the town plan. That was why Vivienne Griffin chose to resign – which was a very proud moment for me. Now, of course, we are best friends again, because we both need votes”.

Under another heading asking “What is your relationship to the state government?” it read “ ... On June 13th last year I spent a lovely day with Premier Peter Beattie attending the state of origin match. I don’t remember much ... because Peter and I were too busy chatting”. Of course the LGRC was assessing whether to amalgamate Noosa at the time, so we had a lot to talk about”.

Mr Abbot, on hearing of the illegal flyer, warned he would take legal action against the offender.

“We have not done any letterboxing of that nature,” Mr Abbot said.

“Anyone plagiarising my logo illegally is going to find themselves in serious trouble.”

Mr Abbot said it sounded like someone associated with his opposition was behind it, or someone campaigning against local division nine candidate and former Noosa councillor Vivien Griffin.

Ms Griffin is mentioned in the flyer.

Neither Mr Abbot nor Ms Griffin knew who or what the NLA was.

The material has been forwarded to the Electoral Commission of Queensland, and Queensland Police, according to Mr Abbot’s campaign office.

Well, it wasn't me! Missing signs, fake flyers.

Who else is in Division 9 apart from Vivien Griffin ? She wouldn't have stolen her own signs I don't think. Nor would she have distributed those flyers. This should not be hard to narrow down.

We need to find out what the NLA stands for. Noosa L.... Association? Maybe Landowners or Landholders if the flavour was to do with "whittling down the Town Plan"?

Anyone else up that way got any ideas? Surely someone has some info?

Similar dirty play in Div 5, I heard. Now who is it that has so much to lose?

Noosa Liberation Association? Perhaps Naughty Labor/Liberal Adventurers? What about Natoli Liability Armament?

The answer to your question savetherange is this. In Coolum we are all aware a small minority of people have been pulling the strings of the marionette twins, Natoli and Dunne for a while now. Vivien Griffen is a threat to the puppet masters and their interests..

What has really upset them is Vivien’s stellar performance and overwhelming support from the 300-400 residents at the ‘meet the candidates’ meeting. The loudest applause of the night came when Bob and Vivien promised to consult with the wider community before acting.

What should really worry Bruce and Joe is that fact that 18 months on, none of the signs opposing the Lend Lease debacle have been removed from the fences of locals. And, residents remain white hot angry about the failure of MSC to consult with residents regarding the bike path through the dunes.

A few months ago Dunne and Natoli offered the gift of a 7 metre by 7 metre sculpture to be placed permanently at the end of Point Perry. Not one resident supported the idea. The only way one could be so out of touch with community values is if they do not engage with, listen to or have respect for the aspirations of the wider community.

Some one must be getting desperate!

I noticed a letter in today's daily from a Bill Freeman trying to make it a noosa versus the 'rest of us' thing. It also had a go at their population cap. I wonder if this is Bill Freeman the developer. You can find reference to this developer in past articles of the Daily as well as elsewhere on the net.

We'll we definitely know what NLA does not stand for -- Natoli Loves Abbot !!

Joe says he copped a dirty campaign last time, perhaps this time he is the lessor of two evils.

If I remember correctly Joe had a fall from a rodeo cow last time round. There was a story in the SCD that he was going to sue or something.

Politics has always been desperate, dirty and dangerous.

BUT there are more residents than developers. We should win. There's the challenge.

Agreed with Savetherange.

There is no real way to narrow down the options of offenders, neither of the two candidates would be foolish enough to do that, And as for supporters, well it could be a supporter of either really.

(and Pescadero, you really need to realise that as much as you'd like to believe it, local government isn't made up of 'puppets' and 'puppeteers'. conspiracy theories and negativite comments are getting quite over done.. really)

Andy, if I am wrong and Mr Natoli has been representing the views and aspirations of the wider Coolum community then it is likely Mr Natoli will win a majority of votes in Coolum next Saturday. Care to place a wager?
I'll betcha a rounded Bob.

Pescadero, no offense but if anything you are evidence of how you may win that bet.

Just because someone represents a community, even if they do many, many good jobs, if they do but a few things that people disagree with (including those things that will in fact benefit them), they are crucified much more for their 'mis-deeds' then they are rewarded for their positive. this is they way humans think now, we are quick to criticize but slow to praise (think about it.. it's true).

Have your say
