Campaign costs for the Sunshine Coast’s mayoral candidates are heading towards pre-election estimates of over $100,000.
But a $50,000 donation to Joe Natoli has helped his cause considerably.
Both Mr Natoli and rival Bob Abbot say they have had to dig deep to run their campaigns – and they will both be having deep and meaningful discussions with their bank managers after the campaign is over.
Mr Abbot conceded he would be as “hocked up” as many other candidates once the campaign bills started flowing in, but he had limited his spending because of a lack of funds.
“We could spend much more than $120,000 but we haven’t got that much,” he said.
“There is no extra money to spend.”
He said the campaign advertising had been “locked in” early on.
“But we are spending every last cent,” Mr Abbot said.
“I’d say I will be borrowing money after this event is over to finish paying the bills.”
Mr Natoli is in better financial health having received a $50,000 donation from an old Melbourne business friend, Rod Menzies, with whom he has dealt art.
The Menzies group of companies is worth $350 million, and the donation was made on the day Mr Abbot announced his candidacy, Mr Natoli said.
“I will have sufficient funds until the end of the week,” he said, but was unable to put a figure on total funds raised.
“I have left Rosanna (Mrs Natoli) to handle that.”
Mr Natoli said Mr Abbot had received funding from the Friends of Noosa group, and the “elite” Noosa community held a $250-a-head fundraiser at Berardos restaurant – and he had wanted to match that.
“He likes to be seen with Pat Rafter and other people, who do not reflect the rest of the Coast,” he said.
“I launched more of a grassroots campaign.”

For those who are concerned that Bob will only look after Noosa residents, his words were, "I 100% guarantee that I will represent 100% of the people of the Sunshine Coast with 100% of my energy."
Many readers of blogs will know that I have previously expressed doubts over Bob's interest in the WHOLE region, but my fears were allayed yesterday and I will certainly be voting for the bloke who is running a positive campaign - not taking out half page ads in the SCD making unfounded claims against his opponent. (on that note, has the journo from yesterday 'clarified' a number if issues pursuant to his subsequent conversation with Bob ?)
Natoli criticises Abbott for being seen with ‘elite’ resident Pat Rafter at a $250 lunch because Pat “does not reflect the people of the coast”.
Finally Joe says, “I launched more of a grassroots campaign”
What the?
“I launched more of a grassroots campaign.”
Oh please Joe. Who writes this stuff for you?
People like Pat Rafter, Sally-Anne Atkins, Raelene Boyle, Agro (Jamie Dunn) and numerous others, all like to be seen with Bob Abbot.
Just because they don't gravitate to you, you try to make something sinister out of it.
Never mind, in six days you can drop the pretence, and send Rosanna back to work.
Joe's speech was largely saying that he used to live in Caloundra and that made him a better mayoral candidate. He also sought to clarify a number of 'myths' about himself - he failed to mention the advertisement he ran in the SCD yesterday accusing Bob of various things, thereby creating 'myths' of his own.
Bob's response to the ad was short, professional and respectful - and in front of Joe, as opposed to the back-stabbing nature of MSC staff. Bob adamantly denied the beliefs Joe portrayed in his ad and reiterated that he will serve ALL residents of the Sunshine Coast, not just those from Noosa.
Let's leave the personal attacks out of the process - it only shows Joe, Tom and anyone else who goes into it as being the kind of politician that the majority of voters don't trust and don't want.
Check menziesgroup.com.au. Does Mr Menzie 'reflect the rest of the Coast'. Goodbye Joe, Mr Menzies might employ you after March 15.
That other bloke was right, he needs better writers, how insulting for our great former champions to be descibed as people who don't reflect our area, as if big business blokes do. Just follow the money.
On the flip side I'd have to say that receiving a donation of "Fifty large" from a single interstate donor has elitism rubbed all over it.
When I roll up at the carpark at the Noosa river mouth on a saturday morning and Pat's pulling his mal out of the back of his car and looks over and says "How ya doing Mate?" ; I instantly felt like I was communicating with the Elite.
Then when Pat's running around in the mixed touch footy down at Coolum , now there's some healthy elitism!
Next thing Joe'll be telling us that Pat doesn't eat food or need to breath oxygen to survive like the rest of us.
But I can say for sure, that each time that I've passed by Joe there has been no acknowledgement.
Zip!
Every time.
Now that's sad.
If they have received any funding, perhaps they would be kind enough to list the amounts and the names of the donors and forward them to this blog.
Equally, subject to moderation, anyone who has knowledge of payments to candidates might wish to encourage them to reveal the amounts and donors.
Sad, isn't it?
If you send me an affidavit TwoWheels, I'll be happy to sign it.

Particularly if a Sitting councilor is up against no sitting councilors (or another one) I have found that he/she particularly will be picked on (i've even seen blatant lies of accusations thrown around)
But alas, if you look through the mud you will find it is indeed shining on a few clean and shiny glass panels, we can only hope it is the panels that get elected.. not the mud throwers.
"I have received no funding from developers and businesses who are stakeholders in the new Shire.
Sad, isn't it?"
No, and pretty understandable from many perspectives.
And, subject to the definition of "funding" and "businesses who are stakeholders", I reckon you are telling porkies, Jeff.
Wouldn't a more general 'I haven't received donations' be a better suite? particularly (don't take it personally Jeff, you just happen to have said it.. many times) when one of Jeff's big issues is that he won't take free gifts.
Could someone explain to me the difference between a 'donation' and a 'free gift'?
(and if someone has received donations, therefore meaning they can't say a general statement, perhaps outlining who they HAVE received would be better, unless they're waiting until 15 weeks after the election, when they're 'in the clear' so to speak)
