I'll leave with head high: Natoli

Joe Natoli said he would leave local government with his 'head held high' after helping to turn Maroochy Council around from the financial mess it was in.

An emotional Mr Natoli told thedaily.com.au he was very proud of his 11 years in council and believed there had been many great achievements, including structural and financial reforms, together with environmental projects like the Maroochy River recovery.

"I walk away with my head absolutely held high,'' Mr Natoli said.

He said he had phoned Noosa mayor Bob Abbot to congratulate him on his decisive victory, saying it was clear the people of the Sunshine Coast preferred him as leader.

Mr Natoli, who struggled to get support for key projects in his own council, including a 2025 vision, said Mr Abbot had a clear mandate.

"I hope that his fellows councillors will get 100% behind Bob,'' he said.

"I hope the whole community will now come together under his leadership.''

Mr Natoli said one of the reasons he believed he had been defeated was that he was unable to shake a strong perception that he was pro-development or in the pocket of developers.

He said those who knew him, knew that was not the case but it was a very difficult message to get out.

And he said the poor public perception of Maroochy Council, following the scandals of former mayor Alison Grosse, had meant it was difficult to convey that there had been big improvements under his leadership.

Mr Natoli said he had tried to steer Maroochy toward a more sustainable future with his 2025 vision but could not get the support he needed of key councillors.

"Today the people have clearly shown they want to have that change.''

Mr Natoli said he did not regret asking Bob Abbot about whether he planned to turn the Sunshine Coast into the gay capital of Australia, but said he believed it had been 'blown up'' in the media.

He said it was legitimate question given that much of the campaign was about how the Sunshine Coast may change - whether it would become more like Noosa - or whether Noosa would get high rises and the like.

Mr Natoli said he was not homophobic but believed the Coast should not be promoting itself as a gay mecca - or putting that label on people coming here.

He said the Coast had already developed tourism brands that most people were more 'comfortable' with.

Mr Natoli admitted he was 'tired' when he asked the prepared question on ABC radio but he said: "I don't regret asking the question.''

Mr Natoli said Mr Abbot had run a very good campaign, using some very high profile people, while his campaign managers Iconic Events, had done a good job in ensuring the message remained on track.

He said his biggest problem was in trying to shake the perception he was pro-development and in the pocket of developers. "That perception plays a big part in the final result,'' Mr Natoli said.

Mr Natoli said he had not even thought about what he would do now but would take a few days away with his family to recover from a tough campaign.

“That’s the impossible question to ask at the end of a very arduous election campaign.

“You know, I haven’t even thought about (what I’m going to do). We’ll have a rest tomorrow and I’ll start to worry about that on Monday.

“All of the energy and commitment to our community I had will be focussed on my family now.”

Mr Natoli said he had always believed there was a good chance he could win it.

“We’ve always hoped people would look at my policies, but in the end, I accept this is what people want.

“When you put yourself up for this position it’s all or nothing and only great leaders are prepared to do that and Bob is a great leader.

“There were two good options and people have chosen Bob.”

He said he didn’t think the result would’ve turned out differently had there been more candidates running for the mayoralty.

“No. Bob Abbot has always been a popular mayor.”

Rosanna will now be the breadwinner while her husband contemplates his future.

“I’m still a bit numb – we’ve worked so hard,” she said.

“We need to move on now and focus on our family and we look forward to a new beginning – and sleep and holidays.

“Then I’m back to work and I’ll have a house husband for a while,” she said.

NEWS today, fishwrappings tomorrow. That's the story of Joe. Lets sweep him under the carpet and get moving with more interesting and important subjects.

After his comments about Noosa being the gay capital of Australia, he should hold his head low. Shame Joe shame. Cheap tacky politics which got him nowhere. No one was going to vote him in ahead of Bob.

I am sorry for Joe's defeat, but never the less, he will still be an important asset for the coast in may other ways as he knows the businesses of the Marroochy shire area.. Good luck in you next endeavours.

If I read Joe's reasons for this whipping, he first blames a perception that he was pro-developer. He next blames the previous Mayor. Third on the blame list came other Councillors not supporting his 2025 vision. However, he does not believe his own discriminatory beliefs and expressed views about gay people had anything to do with the result.

So, everyone and everything else is to blame, but Joe himself is not.

Managing perception of himself and of his Council requires Leadership. He had 11 years to establish a positive perception of himself and several years as Mayor to show positive step-change in the running of the Council. He failed, on both counts.

Success as a Leader also involves influencing those whom one leads to unite behind one's vision. He failed - again.

Being a Leader requires tact, diplomacy and policy positioning skills. The 'discussion' on the gay issue is just one example of how sadly he is lacking in those requirements. Another failure on his part.

Most people, when they lose, show humility and selflessness, are magnanimous in defeat and accept responsibility. No Joe, not you!

Politics is about perception as much as it is about reality, so there's no point telling everyone how poorly misunderstood you were.

Just by doing nothing, Bob Abbott would have won. But, Bob Abbott is by no means the ideal Mayor. It's just that Joe is complete liability, as are those around him - as has been evident by the results so far tonight which indicate that most of his side-kicks and cronies from Maroochy are gone, gone, gone.

Joe and his buddies have reaped what they have sewn over the past 11 years. Good riddance boys!

My husband and I are overjoyed that Bob Abbot had won the race on becoming the first regional super council mayor.

Mr Natoli has done a great job for Maroochydore but at the end of the day he wasn't the right mayor for the big job.

I am very disappointed that Mr Natoli was so verbal in his campaign and i am sure that is what contributed to his down fall.

Bob's laid back attitude and honesty is what was more appealing to my husband and myself. I just hope that the sunshine coast stays as a affordable and stable family environment.

Bob Abbot CONGRATULATIONS on such successful campaign ran with the utmost dignity. We look forward to watching what you do to the sunshine coast in the near future.

Onya Bob. Hope you have a gay term as Mayor and that Noosa is always Noosa. But do me a favour and lose some weight. Your good health will ensure you are around for a lot longer to enable you to keep up the good work.

Hey Joe,

Maybe you could move to Canberra and start a Joe for PM movement ?...I have an Old T-Shirt already printed if that helps you out.

I trust we have all learnt a lesson or 3 from the way the last several weeks have rolled by..thanks for the lesson Joe.

Comiseration Joe. The best Candidate won on the day. Sad to see you are still playing the blame game. The previous council was NOT in a financial mesh.

Ed, Not being a resident of the Sunshine Coast, this was one battle that kept me interested over several weeks and here at Redcliffe, a interesting outcome for the residents of Pine Rivers, Redcliffe, Caboolture, Bribie Island, Deception Bay and other districts. Last night was an historic night when local government under went a massive change. As we await the super councils to meet; are we heading into troubled times? Whilst we can acknowledge that, the previous structure - to a degree, was causing some problems; what happens to local government if the Queensland State Opposition were to win the next election. Could we see further changes?

Whilst questions are now being asked re the operation of the Electoral Commission of Queensland leading up to yesterday's poll, were there any problems yesterday up there on the Sunshine Coast? Having something forced on me (super councils) when a handful of people get their recommendations approved by a growing incompetent Queensland ALP Government, then it doesn't have my support. Considering that the new councils will have a interesting time, it remains interesting to see if new council chambers will be found. What happens to the old chambers? Many questions will need some careful consideration to and answers.

It is done, and sealed, the Sunshine Coast Regional council is settled and up and will be operating after the polls are declared, congratulations to the winners and commiserations to the losers.
It is noted in previous comments that there are a number of commentators who enjoy twisting the sword implanted in Joe Natoli, one wonders how well they know the bloke or maybe they sit in the nasty box throwing rocks at passers-by.

To Big Bob and the Councillors, you are all under the spotlight now. There will be many who expect wondrous things. They will of course be disappointed when their expectations do not rise from the ashes, the old council plans.

There are important infrastructure planning and implementation needing priority attention including dredging of the Mooloolah River and harbour. We have fours years to assess this council’s performance.
Four years is a short time, however, politicians are judged on performance not looks and promises

Good riddance to bad rubbish!!! Joe, you buried yourself, in the last couple of weeks....NOT the media, and not anyone else.

The people have spoken and they clearly want and believe in Big Bob for the Big Job and thank God for the will of the people....

Joe im sure there is much more in store for your life... many more great things to come... you would have done a great job as mayor and it is unfortunate that you did not receive this job... but its not the end... keep your head up and just keep doing your best in all areas and im sure when you get to something you are meant to be doing everything will go perfectly.... there may be bigger and better things too come.... but GOODLUCK with everything!

Joe,

You have done some great things as Councillor and then Mayor and others not so great.

I believe you should have been open and honest about the ongoing interference you faced from Tom Hulett and his puppets, particularly in the way they buried the 2025 community vision project, but you chose instead to try diplomacy to get things done... unfortunately that approach ended up backfiring on you.

However, there was no excuse for you comments of the last few days.

You have a lovely and supportive extended family, many of whom I have met and been impressed with, and I'm sure you will soon find your feet.

Thank you for the many good things you have done over the past 11 years and I wish you the best in the future.

It couldn't happen to a "nicer" guy! Maybe now you have learnt to think before you speak.
Good on you Bob!!

Unfortunately for Joe he didn't have a team playing the same game.

Let's hope the new team, and it is looking extremely good, will plan the future, tell us honestly what the plan is and stick to it so we can all get on with our plans.

Maroochy 2025, as I recall was this community's plan, contrary to the claim made by Joe in the article. Let's not discard it with him.

It should be pulled out of the bottom drawer and given another airing, updated and drawn heavily on for the next round of town planning amendments.

What’s that you say Joe ‘not pro development and not in the pocket of developers'? Sounds like one last ditch effort to kill off Maroochy 2025.

Congratulations to Bob Abbott - Bob's statement that he would provide an open, transparent and accountable Council won the votes of many. The people of Yandina and Nambour voted with their PENS Jo because you did not provide open, transparent and accountable government. You thought you could treat the Rate payers with the disrespect evidenced by making a decision without community input and thereafter behind closed doors in relation to the proposed Bioreactor and still
gain their respect !!! WRONG . Please Bob, keep to your word that you will give us all an open and transparent accountable Council. We are all watching to see what you will now do with the Bioreactor
site.

Joe, I have watched your political career with interest in the years since your Natoli Brothers days.

I have been a silent supporter in principle, but have been a little jaded by some of your decisions. I was unaware of the issues with some of your councillors - perhaps that would have helped me to understand better and certainly it would have been nice to see you clearly and definatively shake that label of being "in the developers pocket".

I wonder though if you fully appreciate just how offensive your "gay" slander was? I have lived in and loved the region for 15 or so years now - I have lived in Noosa, Cooroy, Maleny, Mapleton, Eudlo, Mooloolah, Palmwoods, Buderim and Mountain Creek and have come to love and appreciate all those areas for their own expressions of our unique Sunshine Coast lifestyle. I have never perceived Noosa as a "Gay capital" - certainly I noticed a thriving Gay community there, but that meant nothing more to me than a confirmation that by and large the Gay community have great taste!

Your comments indicated a perception that the Sunshine Coast community would feel marginalised and intimidated by the prospect of a strong Gay community here and I think THAT is where you missed the boat. The very characteristics of openness and acceptance that make the people in our region so wonderful were completely disregarded - you misread your audience and it backfired on you.

I don't know if the final result would have been different without the negative campaigning you resorted to in the past couple of weeks, but I would bet everything I own that the margin of difference would have been much smaller.

Let this be a lesson to all you politicians out there - insult our intelligence and reap the rewards!

Despite this, I sincerely appreciate your past 11 years of service and wish you all the best in the future.

Residents in the last 6 weeks particulary the last 3 , have seen the type of person Natoli really is !! Believe Me! The 'blame game ' nasty ' personal comments ' against his opponent Big Bob and others, is his normal modus operandi in my opinion. Taking credit for Projects in Council he never instigated, denying he is pro -development - that's one for the " books "!

Then I expected the result -- Natoli has the same Birth date as John Howard - another blamer -- 26th. of July each year -- but not the same year.
Pleased they have both gone now .

Unfortunately Joe it was your ego and hubris that did it for you.

Hey Joe,

The fruit & veg deparment Manger @ Woolies Mountain Creek has called me...he is worried you haven't arrived for work mate ?...are you OK ?

They have transformed a spot in the carpark to a stall for you to park your bull when you ride to work... but don't fall off it & do you back in mate.

Joe,

It just goes to show no matter how much money you spend, no matter what you say, it's your past actions that a person is judged on. Money does not buy integrity. Remember the stress you put all those innocent people through after your Bull Riding incident. Good bye Joe, 3 cheers for Bob.
on 17 March, 2008 at 1:23 p.m. ( Suggest removal )
I think that Joe lost simply because no one knew what he really stood for. He has made so many contradictory statements which never matched his actions, that it was hard to believe that he ever really stood for anything.

Stelis, I'm glad someone else said it, and proud to say I'm not surprised it was you that stated:

"Doesn't it put your faith back into the human race when they feel the need to kick someone when their down?"

I think perhaps a lot of people here need to have a hard look in the mirror.

Have your say
