Abbot promises to deliver

Abbot promises to deliver

Noosa mayor Bob Abbot celebrates a decisive victory in the first Sunshine Coast council elections.

"Thank you and I will deliver.” That was the message last night from a jubilant Bob Abbot as he claimed victory in the race to become the mayor of the first Sunshine Coast super council.

“We’ve won every division so far, we’ve won every booth so far and I think it’s time to say that’s not going to change,” Mr Abbot told a roomful of cheering supporters about 7.30pm.

About 70% of the electorate backed “Big Bob for the big job”, a trend that was clear from early results and remained consistent throughout the count.

He won about 95% of the vote in his home shire and had decisive margins in all divisions throughout the Sunshine Coast.

Mr Abbot said the outcome was a clear nod of approval for his policies and he was looking forward to implementing them over the next four years.

“I’m extremely happy, very proud, very much feeling now that the people of the Sunshine Coast have put their confidence in my policies and now I’ve got to do it, it’s as simple as that,” he said.

“It is a powerful mandate and it is an overwhelming ‘yes’ and it is an overwhelming ‘we want what you said you would deliver, and in the next four years’.

“I will do what I said I was going to do – create the foundation for a good council long term, establish the basis that’s needed to make the Sunshine Coast Australia’s first sustainable region and deliver to the Sunshine Coast a council they can be proud of.

“My message to the voters of the Sunshine Coast is thank you. Thank you dearly.

“I’ve committed myself to a job that I know I can do and I will deliver.”

Mr Abbot thanked his campaign team and his partner Susie, saying she had been a “rock” throughout the rigours of the campaign.

“She probably hasn’t seen me much over the last couple of weeks and Toby’s been barking at me when I came home because he probably didn’t recognise me,” he said.

Former Maroochy mayor Joe Natoli was gracious in defeat, saying he accepted the people’s choice and wished Mr Abbot well.

Mr Natoli said he hoped the council would support their new leader and that the Sunshine Coast would move forward as a united region.

“I hope the whole community will come together under one regional council and accept it can be a bright future, and I hope the Sunshine Coast can achieve the aspirations it wants under new leadership,” he said.

“I know the people that worked for Maroochy Shire will make a magnificent contribution.”

Mr Natoli said he had no regrets about standing for the mayoralty, and had given little thought to what he would do next.

Congratulations Bob. You have done a wonderful job as Mayor for Noosa, now the rest of the Coast will benefit from your experience and expertise.
Looking forward to what transpires over the next few years.
Just one thing Bob. Would really love to see you around for the long term, so please loose a bit of weight and throw those fags in the bin.

Congratulations Bob, it was refreshing to see your 'how to vote cards' printed in one colour on recycled paper as compared to the glossy presentation of your competitor. Demonstrated your beliefs without opening your mouth....

Well done Bob - the best man won. Just one thing though Bob could you please dress like a Mayor should? Your current style is out of order for a man in your position and it could make the Coast look totally unprofessional!!

Go Bob, knew you would do it. Keep up the good work and make us proud, we're behind you every step of the way!!

Congratulations go to Bob and every new representative of the Sunshine Coast Super Council, well done. Comments on the Joe Natoli page ask Bob to please lose some weight for his health so he will be around for much longer. I am adding my support for Bob to do that also. By all accounts Bob Abbot, you are a good man and THE man for the job of the new 'Super' Mayor, we want to have you around for more than one term if you fulfill your duties. So to begin a new era for us all and especially yourself, please try to be as healthy as you can be so you will be around for as long as possible. As far as dressing like a 'Mayor should', dress however the damn you like Bob. Stuffy mayors in stuffy suits and ties look unapproachable for the most part. I'd prefer Bob stick with what he is comfortable dressing in, unless of course jennyb wants to pay for the suits that would have to be tailor made for Big Bob!

Well Noosa has a mayor, who is going to look after Maroochy and Caloundra?

Unreal Bob, congratulations we have the best man for for the job on the Sunny Coast. And in reference to jennyb's comment about your dress style please don't change it's your individual, personable and colorful style that makes you who you are. We love you and in Billy Connelly's words 'don't ever become a beige person'

BIG BOB WILL DO THE JOB FORSURE
THIS IS ONLY JUST THE BEGINNING

IT'S GOING TO BE FACINATING TO WATCH BIGBOB TRY AND REPLACE EVERY TRAFFIC LIGHT ON THE COAST WITH A ROUNDABOUT.
I THINK YOU'VE BITTEN OFF A BIT MORE THAN YOU CAN CHEW BUT WHEN ALL IS SAID AND DONE AT LEAST YOU'LL HAVE UNCLE BOB'S JUG BAND TO WAIL THE BLUES THROUGH YOUR HARP......MAYBE THIS WHOLE EXPERIENCE IS TO MAKE YOU A BETTER MUSO? THERE'S GOING TO BE SOME SAD STORIES TO TELL AT THE END OF THE DAY.
A NOTE TO JOE NATOLI - YOU HAVE DONE A GOOD JOB IMPROVING THE LIFESTYLE OF THOSE IN THE MAROOCHY SHIRE AND HAVE EVERTHING TO BE PROUD OF - YOU WERE FACED WITH A MAJORITY OF SMALL BUSINESS TRADERS WHO RELY SO HEAVILY ON THE TOURIST DOLLAR SO I'M GUESSING THEY THINK HAVING THE SUNSHINE COAST AS THE GAY MECCA OF THIS COUNTRY IS A POSITIVE THING. FROM OUR FAMILY TO YOURS WE WISH YOU WELL.

Congratulations Bob, and I echo the sentiments above, be yourself, that's who we voted for, just be around to see zero waste to landfill by 2020 along with Kulangoor folk please!

Bob is going to be Mayor for the entire region aussie_w, not just Noosa, or hadn't you noticed we had an election yesterday?

Absolutely awesome Bob, best possible result! Congratulations.

Bob is who Bob is... who needs another stuffy business man in a business suit?

I believe the sunnycoast is unique, so why not re-enforce that image with a unique Mayor?

Congratulations on your victory Bob... I look forward to the "Noosa way of doing things" spreading throughout the whole Sunshine Coast!

Congratulations go out to you, Bob. You can deliver only just a bit farther south on the coast now!
We need your values and policies implemented to match growth and development with habitat preservation here in Caloundra and Pumicestone Passage.
We can use recycled paper at all the council offices now.
Keep wearing your suit, Bob. It's the only one you have and it works!
Here's a big Texas toast to our new Sunshine Coast Mayor.

Congratulations Bob. Spectacular result all round. Good luck with the new big job, paricularly with dealing with the State and their notions about our population.

Please don't listen to the likes of jennyb regarding image. Ties and suits on the Sunshine Coast are for real estate agents and undertakers.
on 16 March, 2008 at 12:32 p.m. ( Suggest removal )
Jennyb? That's ridiculous. The last thing we need is some stuffed shirt moron running the coast. Bob is who he is, dress and all. If you wanted someone in a suit, you should have voted joe. Get a life.

Well done Bob!!!

jennyb update yourself.

Culture and diversity are the big thing! Big Bob is the perfect image for the Sunshine Coast, the best place in the world.

Congratulations Bob, and welcome to 'our world' we look forward to your leadership and support of some very good councillors who understand the relevance of the hinterland.
on 16 March, 2008 at 1:58 p.m. ( Suggest removal )
I have no doubts that Bob will work for the whole of the Sunshine Coast. We are one Council now and everyone should stop thinking as if the old council boundaries are still here.

Don't change a thing Bob, we choose you for mayor because of your beliefs and not how you dress etc. How rude some people are.

I for one would love to see some of the traffic lights replaced with roundabouts! We have too many here in the middle of the Coast.

Once again, good job for Big Bob! You have our support.
on 16 March, 2008 at 2:05 p.m. ( Suggest removal )
I agree with Jennyb - a shave and a fresh shirt wouldn't hurt.
Who wants the international community to think we have a hippy running the coast?
It's all joy and jubilation now but wait a few months and really see how things are going to pan out - we'll be drinking our own reticulated waste amongst other joyful things.
on 16 March, 2008 at 2:09 p.m. ( Suggest removal )
Jennyb I tend to disagree with your comment on Bobs dress sense. His dress sense is what makes him so unique, he is larger than life (no pun intended) and stands up to what he believes in. Congratulations Big Bob.
on 16 March, 2008 at 2:11 p.m. ( Suggest removal )
Grow Up Jennyb, what a stupid comment. It's about the man you fool, not the way he dresses....just ask Joe Natoli

Well done Bob, just keeping on do what you do, the way that you do it....don't change a thing.
on 16 March, 2008 at 2:42 p.m. ( Suggest removal )
There isn't much that I can say which hasn't already been eloquenty stated above.

Good on you Bob. I am 100% confident that you can do it. And it looks like you may have a Council which you can actually work with. It's so good to see the end of most of the "Back Room Boys".

I think that the outcome would have been very different for Joe if he had this new Council behind him instead of the one which he did have. But that's water under the bridge now.

I don't think that you should change your clothes either. We need as many points of differentiation from other regions as we can get. What could be better than being represented by a totally unique Mayor. They won't mistake you for any of those other Mayors.

On the sensitive subject of your health and longevity...perhaps you could join that 20/20 weight challenge. What better way to start off as Mayor for the whole Sunshine Coast !

Well done Bob, You have a huge task ahead, I couldn't imagine caring less about what you wear - Armani suit, T-shirt, hell you can walk around starkers for all I c... Actually, no, you should wear something, but as long as you do your best to preserve our precious environment you'll continue to get my vote.

And well done to the people of the Coast for rejecting rampant development and homophobia. It seems we took our responsibility seriously this time, but don't drop the ball now folks, there's a heap more work to do. Our new council will only function well as long as we stay involved in the process. A touch of the old 'eternal vigilance' will go a long way towards making the Sunshine Coast a model for other communities.

I wish Bob and his elected councillors good luck in the task ahead, as long as you never forget why you were chosen by the people you represent - even the ones who didn't vote for you - you'll do fine.

Well done one and all, and remember...Play nice!

Hey Bob,

You Da-Man....congrats. My concern for you is your health mate...try to become a Big Looser just like Joe...of weight thats is :-)

My true concern is that you were busier than a Whale dodging a harpoon in the Southern Ocean before...what the hell is it going to be like looking after The Super-Council ....talk about time poor or busier than a one armed bricklayer in Baghdad.

Anyway mate...great Job, now on with the Show as Joe rides his Bull off into The Sunset...hope he has no more falls.

I look forward to seeing your work your magic & your leadership of the new team...its going to be a very interesting 4 years...I wish you good things, good health and strength at difficult times and when dealing with difficult decisions.

Cheers,

Myke.

Congratulations Bob, on a huge victory!

Congratulations also to the Daily, and in particular Mark Furler for the brilliant coverage of the election in these blogs.

We bloggers were all able to discuss (mostly in a civil manner) our thoughts on who was doing what to whom, and it made it a very enlightening experience for me.

I'm sure we all learned a lot from the experience over the last three weeks in particular, and for that, Mark, congratulations and thanks!

- Thank you to all who have contributed to thedaily.com.au's coverage of the election campaign - including my small team - Suzanne Keen, Star Delaney and Mark Chapman. Special thanks should go to Star who had the huge job of pulling our election pages on candidates together, together with the wider team at the Daily, including Jane Gardner, Carolyn Tucker, Kathy Sundstrom to name a few. It's been a busy few weeks but it's been heartening to know that our efforts have been generally well received. To all the candidates who put their hearts, money, passion and efforts into the past few weeks, I say well done. Democracy is never the same when we don't have a choice. I hope the Coast can put some of the division behind it and move on as a united region which acknowledges the right of communities to retain their own special look and feel - Editor

Yes. Thanks Mark and team. It can't have been easy with some of the silly things which some of the (other) bloggers have had to say.

What on earth are we all going to talk about now ? What are we to do ?

Congrats Bob. Its good to have some fresh blood and minds running this region. While I know very little about Bob Abbot, I have seen testimony of how Noosa has been managed and quite frankly its top class, world standard and very trendy.

I suggest you cast the same influence on Maroochy and definitely Caloundra. I have lived on the coast for several years and I love it.

I was not for the amalgamation at all and frankly I did not expect you would be chosen to be our Mayor, but out of all the choices, it turned out to be a better choice to have Bob Abbot running the super council rather than the others.

You're an ordinary person like everyone else and one that cares.

By the way, don't worry about your dress code, that is how you are, but why not take up losing some weight for your own health sake...

In re: What to do now?
I'd say we put on our "big girl panties" and get on with support and involvement in the outcome of our lifestyles here in the Sunshine Coast.
Let's stay vocal about what we truly value and implement changes which work for us as well as our diverse natural environment.
Let's all give Mr Abbott all the support he needs to do his job as Mayor for us.
That's what the rates and taxes are all about.
I'll end with a quote I have heard repeatedly of late
"BE THE CHANGE YOU WISH TO SEE IN THE WORLD"

What about state boundaries Savetherange ? Is this something which the residents need to know about ?

Is that independent review board at it again. Are we going to be amalgamated with NSW and NT ?

why would you think Noosa has been well managed? I like Bob and he's good on the harmonica too and he got my vote, but have you been to Noosa in high season?

Its manic!! ok we dont have high rise but we cant cope with the over development and invasion of people that takes place. Free buses because we cant park anywhere, as locals we cant get near our beach or fav places because we are over loaded in a bottle neck envioroment (by the way ratepayers pay for the buses).

That is not good management, however I am behind Bob as he was best for the Job (I believe) but he said in a meeting during campaign " do not vote for me and put unexperienced or boof heads in the divisions it will make the job too hard"

Are we there yet? .....................

The result proves the sunshine coast is becoming the worlds largest retirement village. I believe a third runner for mayor would have been a different result also. So many people I talked to said they voted for Bob but they didnt want Joe so what other choice can they make. Voting for the lesser of two evils seemed to be there theme. I find it also interesting that land values came out today and on the coast Noosa (population cap) had the highest increase in the cost of land...now I wonder what there unemployment is at the moment?

However this result while most likely see the exact thing happen to the coast that happened with Noosa. People wont live here and work here. Just as people would move to the old maroochydore council then drive up to noosa for work, now people will be coming from councils even further to the south to work on the coast. Now people might say hey what so bad about that at least there not living here but what this does is give jobs to people outside the sunshine coast making it harder for local residents to find work.

Im also interested to see what happens when the population cap reaches its limit, will we put a couple of guards at the entrance to the coast saying sorry where fall please turn around? My prediction children will stay at home longer(well they will have to if they want to stay here) people will start sharing there houses. A 4 bedroom house will start holding around 8 residents with garages being used for rooms, meaning more cars will be parked on the street. Its funny how I hear everyone talking about how things like amalgamation wasn't democratic yet they want to put in a cap to stop people moving to a region. I suppose that telling people where they can live in Australia is democracy but communism in China...

I also find it very interesting to see comments on blogs like "I dont really know anything about bob and I have only lived on the coast for about one year but I voted for him'
It makes me wonder and worry how many people voted without actually looking into policy or voted because pat rafter is there favorite sporting hero and he supports Bob? It also makes me wonder how many people voted just because they had seen Bobs face more. It seems disturbing that there are so many people out there voting that don't really care or dont look at policy when making there decision. Perhaps compulsary voting should be removed and perhaps advertisements should only feature the person running? People can still say who they endorse as the leader they just cant appear on campaign run adds.

Have your say
