Preferences cost O’Kearney

It seems almost ironic that preference votes might end the dream for Danny O’Kearney.

He was the only candidate in his division who did not make a preference deal.

Because of that, his four competitors placed him as number five on their how-to-vote cards.

Last night, Mr O’Kearney was not feeling comfortable that he would make it, despite winning the primary vote.

“I have won the primary but it will definitely come down to pre-voting and preference voting.

“Everyone else has preferenced each other. That’s because I don’t do preferences and they’d already done the deal months ago.”

His main rival, Keryn Jones, said she had done extraordinarily well to get the second-highest amount of votes against incumbents and former state politicians.

She can still win it.

“It is clear people are looking to me for the same reasons they chose Bob, sustainability and the environment,” she said.

Well done division 3 you made it clear that you don't want what you have had, It's obvious Danny O'Kearney has some loyal supporters however the clear message is that u are not the favoured, and from your comments you clearly know that too. The exchange of preferences was not done 'months' ago and you are not a victim of being left out, it was your choice. If there is any justice, your inability to share preferences with other candidates will show the truth over the next few days as the real winner emerges.

Go Keryn Jones! What an amazing women, an honest campaign and a transparent one, sharing preferences with Gordon and Chris just shows that you guys ultimately wanted the best for our division and if that meant sharing you were in it for the greater good. Gordon you asked people to vote for the greater good of our coast that you have served honorably, I congratulate you.

I am fortunate to know many of the candidates and Keryn I salute you for your honesty and courage to stand for what you believe in, to stand amongst the old school of boys who have played this game more than a few times. You have shown the people on the coast that one person can make a difference, you live and work your beliefs and show us that being green does not mean you have to be typecast as an extreme hippie, clearly demonstrating we can all make a difference in our community and say NO to becoming another Gold Coast.

I look forward to your announcement as Councilor for Division 3 and knowing that you will be keeping the new crew elected accountable.

Well done Keryn,
Couldn't agree more with Ivy's comments.
Fingers crossed that preferences flow in Keryn's favour and we will have dedicated, passionate representation for our region.

On your site it says Election comments must not be abusive. I see that most of them seem to be very abusive. I am very disappointed in this.
All sitting councillors put up a good fight, in some cases they won in some cases they didn't....... but no need for disulliosioned voters to vent their spleen........
Everyone who ran is a winner for putting themselves up - and especially so with having to put up with this mindless drivel from people who have nothing better to do than insult other people (most of whom they obviously don't know personally)

Danny O'Kearney and Gordon Wallace have both been excellent sitting members, and it is a shame they both can't be chosen. Should Danny lose out by not allocating preferences that will be a tragedy. I am always quite insuted when someone tells me whom I should prefer - surely I should be able to have free choice. I have never followed a 'how to vote' card - I put my preferences where MY preference is - not where someone else's preference is. This was optional preferencial voting, and I am amazed that people didn't use that option - rather than following blindly like the proverbial lemmings.

If Danny does go down then I commiserate, I think he was a pretty good councillor, but he was in the thick of preference deals at the last election.

Sorry, Emma Jane, but after years of being at the mercy of some of these councillors (especially Div 4 and his cronies both inside the council and out) who have caused much anger, grief, worry and loss of money to the residents, we not only will be venting our spleen, but will dance in the streets.

For years they have hidden behind the council's propaganda machine, silencing residents with legal action at every turn - all paid for with our rates money.

Good riddance I say, and lets hope that the new council not only expose their wrongdoings, but learn from their mistakes.

Emma, who exactly is being abusive on this thread?

Did we all not just enjoy the right to make choices and select preferences on Saturday, and now have the right to have those preferences counted and mean something, or would you like to have this fair system changed because your not getting what you want, are you venting from your spleen?

Well said Dump the chump, I'll dance in the streets too!

Will that mean I'm a proverbial lemming?

Have your say
